For the day that's in it:

    Turkey
    Ham
    Sprouts
    Roasties
    Mash
    Cauliflower au gratin
    Glazed carrots
    Cranberry jus
    Gravy

Wait, did you say a fiver? Mashed spuds, without butter.

    Mashed potatoes, beans and eggs

Aldi baby spuds are less than a euro. Add a couple of chops or something to that. Either beans or peas. Nice big dinner there

Go to Tesco at around 5 or that, and they have sections of the store which have meat thats about to go-off. Seeing as you will be cooking that night, it shouldnt be a problem.

I got liver there for 40c, a huge amount of it. Not into that? Sometimes they have lamb or bacon there (again, a huge piece) for no more than about €3. Magic.

Look for a lot of things you can buy in bulk. Like pasta\spuds\rice\cous cous.

    Then expand on that.

With the rice\cous cous you could chuck in some tuna (1e a tin in tesco I think).

Failing all that I think you're better off hitting the eurosaver. Although it wont fill you.

As a young boy I never use to eat my hang sandwiches in school. Go down to the local primary school at 3pm and pay the younguns 50c for their lunch.

On way back stop in the local and eat the sandwich with a pint. Sorted.

Ok make one of my favourites then.

soften some onions, add the raw rice in and stir through a tin of tomatoes. Add a little boiled water too. When rice is almost cooked, stir in some chopped peppers and some kidney beans. Then add some of the chili sauce and if you have other herbs, throw some in. Add some cheese and mix through and serve with some salad, in a wrap or on a baked potato. Yummy. That receipe feeds 4 so use less tomatoes etc or make it and freeze for a few days. I buy Tesco salad cheese that is like mozzerella and its about 59c I think and use about half of it for this meal.

*Tip for the mozzerella - open the bag of it inside a sandwich bag, take out the cheese and cut what you need off it, then put back into the original bag with the water and seal the sandwich bag around it so that none of the water leaks out and it keeps it fresh for a few days.

Just cooking for yourself? Easy so - big bag of pasta from Lidl, and a tin of sauce. That should leave you with €2 +, so you can even buy milk!

€5 is plenty to feed yourself for a night. Once you don't have kids, you can wing it no problem.

I've been fine-tuning this concoction for a while now:

Chop up half a bell pepper into strips, finely chop a clove of garlic, some jalapeño pepper slices, a bit of ginger (you can get small jars of this)... fuck it on a non-stick frying pan with some oil, mix it around, then fuck in your rice on top of that, mix it around again, then lob in a half a tin of beans... lash on some soy sauce for a bit of saltyness, mix it into a big blob, fry the shit out of it then eat it with some cheese & onion crisps.

I am available to present my own cooking show btw.

When you think about it, is €5 enough to feed you adequately - every night?

I mean Pasta will fill you but has very little nutritional value.

a bit of ginger (you can get small jars of this)...

Dont buy jars of ginger. Buy a whole knob of it and cut it into approx 1 inch pieces and put in a sandwich bag and freeze. Then when you need some you have a piece to simply defrost.

Get a jar of Tesco light choices sweet and sour sauce €1.50
Tesco Healthy living chicken mini fillets €3.19

Fry the chicken (and any veg you can find in your house) and add it to rice and sauce.

In future, buy proper chicken (those mini fillets are fine to eat but not what would really be someone's first choice) and you can freeze it for ages, and get some nice veg in the house.

Jesus there is nothing like a pint of Guinness (€3.80) and some cheese and onion Tayto (€80c).

    40c left! Genius!

€5 is plenty as long as you work it on a weekly basis, ie. €35 a week. If you include buying bulk and freezing, taking advantage of special offers in the shops, you'd have plenty.

Pasta Carbonara is easy. All you really need is some rashers, pasta, cheese and an egg, plus black pepper. If you have one or two of those ingredients at home you're sorted.

Oh right, I misread the "€" as an "E", never mind.

Bit of minced steak - coupla spuds. Burger buns.

    Burger and chips.

Agree completely. Even making a big pot of something (stew or a curry for example) that can last 2-3 meals in the pot.

Carbonara should be made with guanciale.

Pancetta if you're stuck, but definitely not rashers.

    Go an omellete,
some onion, tomato (anything really) 2 rashers fry the lot up. Then chop the rashers up, put the fried vege and chopped rashers into a bowl with 2 beaten eggs, mix add a bit of salt and pepper, pour it all back into the pan and cook.

Then eat with some toast. It never looks the best but its very tasty and filling, then contact your nearest physician.

Dried pasta, thing of eggs, chopped rashers.

Cook the rashers. Then cook the pasta and drain it. Add one egg and one extra yolk (beaten) to the hot pasta and stir the hell out of it. Add in the rashers and a bit of ground pepper and voila; carbonara

Or: chop some veg and fry/steam it put it in a small frying pan, also fry some chopped up rashers. Then break 3 eggs into a bowl and beat, add to the frying pan and cook underneath. Stick it under the grill to cook on top and you have a fritatta.

    What have you got?

I'd say some sort of savory mince dish.

    Mince
    Potatoes
Frozen Veg - the pea/sweetcorn/carrot/green bean one
Some sort of gravy type thingy

First they came for the socialists...

Buy a loaf of bread, some grated mozzarella cheese and some Tesco pasta or bolognese sauce. If you have enough money left buy some tomatoes.

Toast one side of the bread. Turn the bread over, put a couple of spoonfuls of the sauce on the bread, put a chopped up tomato (if you have one) on top of that and finally put the mozzarella cheese on top. Return to the grill until the cheese is brown.

The packs of Spinach & Ricotta Tortelinni out of tescos are lovely and cook in about 3 minutes. Buy a cheap tomato sauce or a dolmio stir in to go with it and maybe a small chicken breast out of the butchers if you've enough money left.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,293 ✭✭✭✭Mint Sauce

Depends what you have in your fridge and cupboards to start with.

Fry some sasuages and streaky bacon in a pot, add some chopped fresh chilli and garlic, tomato puree, tinned tomatos, chicken stock, cracked pepper, basil, and simmer for about 30 to 45 minutes, boil some pasta, and mix it all together, will give you about 3-4 servings depending on how hungry you are, or how much sausage and bacon you put in.
