Getting a charity number

    Im not sure if this is in the right section but cant find anywhere else to ask it. How you do register for a charity number? I know there is no real registry for charities in ireland and getting a number only qualifies you for tax exemptions, so is it really necessary to register? Can you legally take donations without a charity number?
