need help choosing dvd player

Hope somebody can help, i bought my daughter a pink dvd player to match her tv but it wont play anything but, pal dvd from shop. wont play them if i burn them. got a black diamond second hand which is no better. can anyone recommend or just point out a player that will play avi, divx, mp4 etc. have been looking in argos…
