Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I was going to post Spanish because I've always had great craic with the Spanish when over there but pragmatic1's post reminded me that the Basque in France (around Biarritz) are just as much fun so I'm going with Basque. Think I'd prefer to live on the Spanish side though, the whole area around Pamplona / Donostia is beautiful.

Quite happy being Irish but if I had another choice I would like to be a mixture of Swiss, Dutch, American, Italian and Armenian.

Maybe I just want to be cheese.

I'd choose either French or English.

French: Not only do I love the language and their lifestyle, I think they also have the one of best cities in the world in Paris. Their history is fascinating and they as a nation seem to be far much more inclined to artistic pursuits than many others, which I respect and enjoy. The country also has a rich and fascinating history.

English: Similar reasons to above, replace London with Paris. I see England as the thinking man's America.

However, I'm more than happy to remain Irish, because we have all of the benefits I mention above plus we haven't taken a colonial piss on half the globe en route to our position now. Yes we're in recession, but flock that, we're Irish! If the nations of the world were a group of mates we'd be the one who cracks open the tins and starts screaming the lyrics to "Killer Queen" after getting laid off. The rest of them would be sitting around getting read to top themselves, apart from maybe the Dutch, who'd be right behind us with a shower of spliffs.

Yo there Salia my son! Didn't say I wanted to be Dutch! I am fully aware of their colonial foibles. I do, however, acknowledge their ability to become chemically altered at the drop of a hat and have a rollocking good time regardless of any of the bollocks going on around them, which is a trait I admire in both their nation and ours.

Disclaimer: My experience of Dutch people is based on a sample of four, who were great craic: they got high on anything they could get their hands on and then discussed literature and art without inhibitions after doing so. And sucked my knob. This, I admit, may not be indicative of the nation as a whole.

I guess I'll be the first so: American

Seriously cool country, once you get past the supposed "stupidity".

They have the cars, the food and it is a beautiful country that I wish to frequent more of some day!

The landscape: forest, mountain, desert, plains, swamp.... all very cool. As opposed to Ireland, "well we have a green and a bit of grey"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,109 ✭✭✭✭Quazzie

Scottish. You have all the benefits of the UK government and all that's good about but the luxury of it being acceptable to hate the English. Plus it's a beautiful country.

As far as I know we could be any if not most other nationalities. If we really wanted to, we could move to Russia or China or indeed any country where nationality is not defined by blood alone and assume that nationality. Germany, where nationality is still legally defined by blood (jus sanguinis) is the only exception I know of at the moment. However, even under German nationality law now, foreigners can attain German nationality without having a blood connection to the country. So, we could be any nationality we want.

Being Irish is an accident of birth that I can live with. As clichéd as it sounds, people are pretty much the same everywhere.
