SSN have just reported the cause of death is not known now,

After earlier reporting he had been found hanged from a Chesire Police statement,

That statement has now had the hanged bit cut off it.

They are however saying that there are no suspicious circumstances suspected. That usually means only one thing. I think they just took away the hanged part to be a little less callous. Can't be nice having friends and family hear the word repeatedly.

He was on Football Focus yesterday.

Great player- doing good job with Wales.

Terrible the demons people have to battle on their own.

A genuinely shocking piece of news.

God knows what torments the guy was going through.

Always seemed likeable, one of those softly spoken guys who never hogged the headlines but was universally respected.

    RIP

As a Leeds fan he was a hero of mine growing up. Speed, Batty, Mcallister and Strachan one of the best midfields ever in the premiership. RIP

Same as that. So many happy memories of him in the Leeds shirt during the early 90's and that huge mop of curls he had for a few seasons.

Shocked does not come close to describing it.

    RIP Gary Speed!
A player who's name I never enjoyed seeing on the opposing team sheet, because you always knew he was going to give 110%!
One of the most consistent and hardest working midfielders of his generation and the 1st player to hit 500 premiership appearances
And on the way to becoming a great manager.
    A big loss!
My condolences to his family and friends!

    Shocking to hear.

Fine midfielder, and looked liked he knew what he was doing with Wales.

Will be very hard for the likes of Bellamy and Allen to play today.

Yes. RIP. A core part of that 1992 league winning side. Just before 1pm Sky News were running a video clip of him and Gary McAllister shaking hands on the sideline just before a Wales v Scotland match. The friendliness between the two was clear to see.

    Utterly devastated.

Watching us under him in the last 4-5 months or so made me more proud to be a Welsh football fan than I've ever been watching my nation - we'd got something special coming on.

Legend for the club too. Thoughts go out to every family member, fan and collegue.

    MOT. RIP.

Very good player in his day.

    RIP.

Alex McLeish just interviewed there on Sky saying that Shay Given is distraught because he was very good friends with Gary from their Newcastle days.

This would be awful if it tips the likes of Gazza,Stan Collymore over the edge.

Depression is as bad as cancer, in fact, it's worse in my opinion.

It's a hidden disease, people don't understand it, don't want to understand it, tell people to "get over" it.

No. There's a bad day, we all have them, and there's a disease.

    Rest In Peace Gary Speed.

Hugely upsetting news. I often hear or read about celebrities passing away, and while I know it's always sad news, it doesn't affect me hugely other than acknowledging such. But this has genuinely upset me. For as long as I've watched football Gary Speed was just always there, he was one of the constants of the Premier League - as sure as there was football on Saturday, Gary Speed would be playing. He seemed just a normal, down-to-earth bloke who loved the game. When you saw Gary Speed, you didn't see a big contract, a flashy car, a supermodel wife or anything you think of with some modern footballers. You just saw a guy doing what he loved and happy to have a platform to do it on. This doesn't change that, it's just what makes it particularly harrowing. Very upset over this, RIP Gary :(

Shocking news, was just about to flick on tv for Super Sunday and caught it on the web. He was a class player, couldn't believe it when I read it was suicide. Started watching football when he was just starting so grew up watching him

Was just watching him yesterday on Football Focus. Can't believe it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 792 ✭✭✭parc

    wow...just wow

it just goes to show how, even if you're successful, have talent and have no money worries something like this can get to you.

i saw it on twitter and did a double take...gary speed? can't believe it. what a dark thing depression must be, and i think i'm only scratching the surface there

    RIP

Just watched live on Sky Sports News the scene before kick off a the Swansea game.

Stadium announcer announces a minutes silence.
    It is not impeccably observed.
Crowd break into spontaneous applause a few seconds in.
Whole stadium begins applauding bar the players on the pitch.
Crowd chant his name again and again.
A genuine tear came to my eye.

    RIP Gary

    RIP.

Strange how it's such a shock, seeing as I never meant the guy, but he was a consumate professional and all round nice guy and that shone through.

Depression is a disgusting horrible affliction, hopefully this might trigger others to get help, there's always someone willing to listen.

    RIP Gary.

My thoughts are with his family. I was just reading that tweet from Stan Collimore last night after watching the recording of Football focus and actually asked myself if there were a lot more players around football who were locked into depression. It really brings it home terribly to hear such tragic news less than 24 hours later.

    RIP

Shocking news. Always seemed like one of the good guys in the game, came across as hugely likable.

Only saw him play once back in the early 90s against Shels. Think it may have been his debut for Leeds.
