Have a Thomson 870 modem here and my gf's laptop has no wireless, airport is broken, and the modem is not detecting the laptop when i connect via a ethernet cable. Wirelessly its all good but why can't I connect the laptop via the cable?

Is the ethernet cable definitely working? Is the ethenet driver installed on the laptop?

Does the laptop work with ethernet on other routers?

Have you tried the ethernet connection with your own laptop?

Could be you've set up a fixed IP on the Ethernet adapter settings on the Mac, then it won't work with the UPC router unless it happens to be in the right range. Check that it's set up right first.

Plug in the ethernet cable, do you get flashing lights arount the port you plugged it into the laptop?

    if yes then go to

    start > run

    type cmd and press ok

a black screen should come up,
type in ipconfig and press enter.

copy and paste the results back and post them here

pretty sure he said it was a mac, so that's not going to work very well for him. :)

Look along the side of the Ethernet cable. Does it say 'patch' or 'crossover' or anything else.
