Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Tom King got gold in Purple Belt masters. Darragh O'Connail had some silverware hanging around his neck in a photo on facebook but I didn't hear his results. Anyone enlighten me?

Fantastic results for the lads. To put this in context for the non-BJJ guys out there, if I was to draw a BJJ map of the world, England would probably be the 5th or 6th largest country on the map. The English Open is the biggest tournament in England. Excellent results!

    Those results are incomplete.
Darragh won (blitzed) the 82 Brown belt Division and Purple masters 88 is missing.

Cheers, youtubed the guys from either division I could compete at. Only found a video of what looks like a closed door MMA event.

The first line of my post is a congratulatory one, if I wanted to have a dig at anyone I would, I certainly dont need boards to do that, and I have kept quiet on threads in the past where I could of spoken my mind but chose the higher ground. Unlike many posters here I do remember it's the Internet and I wouldnt put anything up that I wouldnt say to your face, which in this case is just a question.

Anyway you are right there weren't that many bjj comps in this country when i was starting out and going the uk or further afield etc isnt always an option for those of us with mortgages, pensions, bills, and more than one full time job.

I was asking what happens in a situation where there are too few competitors for a division, and are seniors, masters, adults etc thrown together (which kind of makes those divisions redundant in the first place) and do people think there are too many divisions or options and does the absolute reflect a truer picture? That is all.

If that's the case I apologise for doubting your motives.
For me the purest reflection of your BJJ skills is how you do against a resisting opponent matching your weight and age. In the Abosolute, size, strength and athleticism factor hugely, probably above actual BJJ skill.
Some of us do manage to make comps abroad with mortgages, pensions & bills, but I take your point.

For my money on this one:

Increasing participation is a good thing. Having masters and senior competitor divisions has certainly done Judo no harm, likewise all the non-combat sports have brackets for seniors etc. I don't see any reason why a 40 year old man starting out in BJJ shouldn't have a division suited to his needs. Likewise a former competitive brown belt should have a division for him to participate in.

Dave I know you've been through the some of the same courses as I have so you'll know the value of retention in sport. Having experienced competitors still involved in your club despite age is not only helpful to younger athletes in the sport, but also increases participation, involvement and the general "buzz" about the sport. We've had many medalists at European level in some of the older divisions in BJJ, which I'm sure inspires the younger fighters at a club to jump in and have a go.

For my money, three competitors managed to travel from Ireland to compete at this tournament while others sat around worring about what division they should be in.

I'd say they're also worried that they'll be sneered at on the internet if they do compete to be honest. Based on my conversations with both my guys and others from other gyms, the competition circuit isn't seen as somewhere you will be respected, win, lose or draw.

In any case I started this thread as a way of congratulating you guys on your performances, but I won't be doing it again. I'll shake your hand next time I see you instead.

Boards.ie is not the competition circuit Barry :)
I've met few people as respectful as those I met at the last few Opens.
I am sick of the negativity that surfaces here, the grapplepalooza thread was derailed with similar, but in the grand scheme of things, who cares.
I'll continue to compete in any case, anyone who doesn't is missing out.

Perhaps I should rephrase. The internet post-competition isn't a very respectful place, win, lose, or draw. This puts people off.

Anyway I'll bow out now. I'm only posting here to avoid real work.

    Dave,

Rugby, a sport I know you also love, has J1, J2, J3 divisions plus seniors teams etc. Is this not just the same?

I'm not sure what the protocol is for merging divisions, is it up to the organiser himself to merge as he feels fit?

I think its important to set a precedent in the sport that divisions exist for every weight class and belt level. And that separate classes exist for <30, +35, +40 etc.

If competitions keep running the divisions the entries and participation will increase, where hopefully, in 10 years all these divisions will have numbers to justify their inclusion.

If you entered the Irish Amateur Boxing at <57 and someone told you there is no one fighting at that weight, you'd be entitled to your medal at <57. It becomes messy if you want to jump in the 61kg division instead, because, to the best of my knowledge, you can't enter two weight divisions therefore couldn't get your medal in <57 and do <61 anyway to get a fight.

I don't see why it should be any different in BJJ. The sport is very competitive and success in competition drives individuals and the availability of fair competition drives competition.

I take the point that someone winning a Gold medal in a group of 2 isn't quite the same achievement of someone winning A gold in a group of 32

I have edited original post which began with congratulations need I remind you. A simple question of are there too many divisions and does the absolute reflect the real standard etc. You have managed to turn into something it was not. I said my congrats and my question was related to the comp in question so not unrelated.

I think i have done more positive things for bjj in Ireland than most on here and certainly individuals like yourself who continue to hide behind user names. I don't think I can recall ever being disrespectful to anyone regardless of their posts on here. I have edited my posts as they seem to have caused offence, I suggest you take the opportunity to do the same.

With regard the rugby analogy, if you don't have enough numbers for a j3 then you don't enter a team and your club only has a j1 and j2. And if you are the only j3 team then there is no competition and you don't win anything.

Done, I’ve no interest in an internet bitching session.
I’m not doubting the positive influence you’ve had on the sport here, I was referring to your recent posts.
It’s fairly obvious who I am and I haven’t said anything that I wouldn’t say face to face.
    Let’s leave it there.
