only really handy ones so far are performance style tweaks, a lot of the texture mods are really really bad.

"kenmod - skip bethesda intro" - removes bethesda intro - speeds up loading.
"kenmod - time on loading screen" - useful
"large address aware 4gb fix" - helps a lot

    HD Shaders
2k Textures (and various other texture mods, like the weapons and NPC clothes)
SMAA injector (super high quality and immensely fast next gen Anti Aliasing method)
    Non-blocky faces
    Better female faces

Wouldn't bother with the texture mods just yet. Installed some of them and was getting crashes every 10 minutes. Aren't they supposed to be releasing the proper mod tools soon?

The > 2GB memory mod is pretty awesome.

If it was the HD shaders mod and you're using an ATI card you need to make some changes to the mod's settings in the config file. The details are on the mod page on skyrimnexus.

I have about 6 HD texture mods at once on an ATI 5970 (you absolutely need Cat 12.1 preview drivers). As noted you have to make a change in the HD Shaders (not a texture mod of course) mod to run it correctly on ATI cards.

With the 4GB Patch (which works on the Steam legit version as long as Steam is open) I dont get any crashes. Without the 4GB mod, even vanilla Skyrim crashes out due to memory leaks. Just like ES:Obsidian, Fallout3 and FO:NV.

Nope it was just normal texture mods. Didn't go for anything fancy (have Nvidia card also). Used to happen alot in Fallout and had to individually go through each texture or mesh file to see which one was causing the problem and then delete it. Didn't bother this time though as too much hassle haha :)
