What are the Chinese thinking though? Which side would they come down on? For my money, they're the most important player in this "game"

Agreed. Apparently the Chinese are "moving troops" on the NK border.

Very interesting 3 minute listen from a former ambassador to NK here. He believes that war is a genuine possibility.

But is it to protect the border from NK refugees or to cross it in the event of the US and SK troops heading north (or both?!)?

  • Registered Users Posts: 273 ✭✭Danpad

I heard a news report today claiming that NK's nuclear weapons are about as half as destructive as the bomb dropped on Nagasaki. So, whilst it would be absolutely devastating to the area where it's dropped and the surrounding population, their weapons are not world enders. The Chinese would surely have to consider the fact that in response, NK would be reduced back to the jurassic period in a very short time. Now, do China really want WW3? I don't think so. There are many aspects of their military that, whilst vast, are not yet 100% combat ready. I don't think they are suicidal. Do they want NK turned into an American base? No to that too. I think the Chinese troops massing on NK's border might be positioned there to restrain NK as much as the U.S

Just my opinions...he says...nervously glancing at his food supplies.

The Chinese dont want the US being nuked as they have lent the Americans trillions to buy Chinese manufactured products. They will use their contacts in NK to force regime change before it gets to the point of war. My money is on a "military coup" any day now with some Chinese trained general taking over. Then a gradual reopening of relations with the south and the US as North Korea transitions to a Chinese style capitalistist Communism.

Both I would imagine. The US would be wary of another engagement with the Chinese on the Korean peninsula after the last time, though their improved technology would mean fewer surprises than they had the last time too.

I reckon China will be very conscious of protecting it's investment in the US, which is about One Trillion Dollars.

I don't see China choosing to go to war with it's investment.

As for those crazy North Koreans, if they were going to take any action, they'd have done it by now, instead of all the sabre-rattling.

My total guess is that Kim Jong Un wants something from China. If they throw him a bone, he'll shut up again for a while.

    Meanwhile, in China:
Authorities in Shanghai will temporarily close all live poultry markets in the city starting Saturday, the city's municipal press office said Friday, after six deaths in eastern China from an unusual strain of bird flu.

The US has (allegedly) gone to Defcon 3.

In the past when they did this:

    -Cuban missile crisis

-73' During Egyptian/Syrian forces mixing it up with Israel.

    - 9/11

    http://defconwarningsystem.com/
Friday, April 12, the US raised its nuclear alert status to DEFCON 3, Condition Yellow (out of 5 levels), stating “There are currently no imminent nuclear threats against the United States at this time, however the situation is considered fluid and can change rapidly.” Many believe that North Korea will launch their test missile on or about April 15. Japan has instructed its armed forces to shoot down any North Korean missile that heads toward its territory.

[Update, 6:35 p.m. ET] U.S. Rep. Bill Keating, D-Massachusetts, said an unexploded device was found at a hotel on Boylston Street, and another unexploded device was found at an undisclosed location.

Keating, who is a member of the House Homeland Security committee and has spoken to law enforcement sources, tells CNN's Dierdre Walsh that the incidents were a "sophisticated, coordinated, planned attack."

An explosion at a fertilizer plant near Waco has left up to 100 people, including children, injured as reports emerged that a nursing home had collapsed trapping dozens inside. Firefighters are reporting multiple injuries as casualties were being rushed to local hospitals in Waco, Texas. The blast at the West Fertilizer plant happened around 7.50pm (CST) on Wednesday and fires continue to burn at the scene. An emergency triage center has been set up at a nearby baseball field. Troopers have been transporting the injured to hospitals in patrol cars, according to Gayle Scarbrough, a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety in Waco. Six helicopters were also en route. Interstate 35 in McLennan County was closed following the blast. Major damage has been reported to homes and vehicles including a nearby funeral home and apartment building, according to NBC5. A dispatcher with the West Texas Fire Department says the explosion happened at a fertilizer plant in the community north of Waco. This Friday, April 19, marks the 20th anniversary of the Waco Siege where 76 men, women and children lost their lives. Hundreds of people were likely injured, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety told Reuters. The spokesman, D.L. Wilson, added that a nearby nursing home collapsed from the blast and that people were believed to be trapped inside.

A targeted MMR vaccination campaign has started at five comprehensives in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot involving more than 2,000 pupils.

Meanwhile vaccination sessions will be run in all 13 of Powys' high schools in the coming weeks.

Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board has said more schools in the Swansea and Neath Port Talbot areas will offer MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccinations in the future.

First measles death suspected in Swansea
It comes as the latest figures for Swansea show measles cases have rocketed to 808 - with an extra 43 being reported since Tuesday.

Extra clinics are expected to be held at local hospitals this weekend, with health officials now anticipating a rush of parents and children wanting the jab.

Health workers are due at Cwmtawe School in Pontardawe today to immunise hundreds of children.

Since the beginning of the outbreak, a total of 77 people have been hospitalised because of the contagious disease.

Many of those being treated are babies and teenagers, with the latter said to be most at risk.

The explosion occurred Wednesday night, damaging or destroying buildings within a half-mile radius. At least 50 homes and buildings were destroyed. Shock waves of an earthquake with a 2-points magnitude were felt as far as Arlington, Texas, approximately 100 miles away.

What does the British government know?
The minister added: “Once we used to ‘dig for victory’. There may come a time soon when we need to ‘dig for survival’.”
