Anders Behring Breivik labeled mentally ill

The mass murderer in Norway was labeled mentally ill, a paranoid schizophrenic. He himself said that this would probably happen. In Norway the maximum prison sentence you can receive is 21 years but you can be locked away in a psychiatric institution until you grow old and die. Is this the reason why he is being labeled mentally ill since the only way to legally lock him up for life is doing this?

Going off and shooting hundreds of kids for an ethnic crusade isn't exactly my definition of mentally sound. He's mad, you can see how mad in his self published autobiography. Even if he wasn't completely around the bend, if I was a judge, I'd never forgive myself if I let that screwball at large again.

He knew what he was doing . I wouldn't call him mentally ill . He perfectly executed his plan . They just want to lock him up for life .

Why are governments getting away with this behavior but individuals are getting life sentences !!

The "only 21 years" thing is a bit of a myth.
The bog standard life sentence is, at max, 21 years, however there is a second version called "containment" whereby they are sentenced to 21 years, need to serve about 10 or so years before they can be eligible for parole and if they serve their original sentence (21 years) and they're still considered a danger to the population their sentence can be extended by up to five years, and then extended after that five years by up to another five years as many times as it is judged that the person is still a danger to society. This can effectively constitute actual life imprisonment.

So I imagine they've found him to be actually mentally ill, as opposed to needing a fudge of some sort.

He's been declared insane and suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. Being insane doesn't necessarily impair someone's motor skills or "handicap" them from being able to kill dozens of people.

Prison is not going to "rehabilitate" him, he is a psychotic. He doesn't think what he did is wrong in any way. In 21 years he could just as easily do it again.

How about gettin the death penalty back instead.
We executed Quisling after ww2,why cant we do the same with ABB,hes a traitor too:eek:
And it will save alot of taxmoney for Norway;)

The problem with the type of person that Breivik is, is that he does not believe that his actions were wrong. He is a paranoid, vain man who believes he is some sort of super hero. Watch him in court. He loves the cameras and his moment in the spotlight. There are no expressions of remorse or regret. He justifies his killing spree. It was a long term goal to do what he did on that terrible day in 2011. To choose to kill the teenagers and other people without any hint of regret is frightening and and the sooner he is locked up for good the better.

    The ultimate question is this:

Is he mad or bad or a bit of both?

He should not be let live in public society ever again during his life, he is obviously very intelligent and could easily spend years planning some complex act of mass violence from within prison which he could execute even if he was 60 years old. I don't agree with the death penalty... purely vengeful punishment. This guy would explode a nuke in a city if he could... there can be nobody more dangerous to society than him... other than him with more money. It's purely mind boggling what he did and can never be understood.

Well..i think the last two american presidents and their cabinet are responsible for a lot more murders than this guy.
So going by the logic that this world follows, this guy should be given a nobel prize,a handshake and put into a position of power somewhere else.
Maybe north Africa have a slot open.Or theres a spot in Obamas administration for medicare.

Not my opinion of course, just stating he should be treated as fairly as everyone else.He might be insane and dangerous, but he still should have the same rights as everyone else surely.

Breivik is dangerous, a mass murderer and I am not a fan of war. It never solves anything or does anything good for anyone.

He should be hung. He knew full well what he was doing, he had plenty of time to change his mind and not go ahead with his morose and muderous mission.

I would call executing children who are begging for their life 'mad'. In fact, I'd make that the very definition of mad.

Does that mean that Muslim extremists that do the same are insane??

This is the thing, you never hear about the mental states of Islamics when they carry out atrocities, it is simply because Anders is a white man that the inherent racism in the media and society at large must push a label of insane onto him.

that is what computer games do to you. he said that the court should either execute him or acquit him. 21 years for murdering so many is a joke. this is what islamic terrorists would get were they to the same deed.

    Most likely.
The state wants him out of sight and off the radar. Not a martyr to his little but dangerous sector of fellow nutjobs and sympathisers.

Do you think executing dozens of children for some vague political goal is the act of a sane person?

Don't blame computer games, there is little to support this theory anymore. If they deem him unfit to return to society after 21 years, his prison term will be extended, so he'll probably be there for the foreseeable future.....
