Carrick's been Utd's most consistent midfielder over the last 12-18 months, despite the abuse.

a calm head like him, with an eye for a forward pass, may have won the game tonight.

it's somewhere between funny and distressing to think that there are still people who think Carrick is useless. mind-blowing.

He has been consistently average and consistenly poor for 12-18 months.

Could have been the fact that he was having a total nightmare again. Useless overpaid lazy clown.

It makes me sick how much we paid for this waster and how much he gets every week.

    what an absolute joke

Get over it. He is not good enough for Utd and if you think he is then you must have some idiotic view on our team

Yes he and only he let us down in the CL Final. He stood out like a sore thumb he was so poor.

Being called idiotic by you is like being accused of being a Klansman that falls over rather easily by Luis Suarez though.

The lad is injured and we are down to two senior strikers. He's a United player, have some perspective.

Congrats to Palace on a well deserved victory. United squad not good enough and as the season progresses this will become more apparent but then again Fergie will soon tell us he is happy with what he has.

Carrick is a decent footballer but was never a United player and the same can be said about Berba. I have been slated before for my opinion but it is my opinion.

At least there is a few good things to come out of tonight. Mame Biram Diouf will never play for United again. We also wont have to play a two leg semi final in January against City or Liverpool

Pogba looks decent enough. The twins are really starting to annoy me. Neither of them seem to be able to finish a match. Maybe Hargreaves was right about the medical staff at United.

Gibson did as well as was possible. But it was never going to be easy for him because when he passed the ball left and no one was willing to take on there man so the ball kept having to come back in the middle and back down the right for Valencia and Smalling.

If we get any more injuries were really going to struggle in the league. The last champions league group match will be squeaky bum time.

Evans is so annoying. He loses his man on a cross and costs us a goal again. He is painfully unreliable.

Lots of disappointing performances tonight, but it's not that bad. This was a team seriously lacking in game time and time on the pitch together. They still dominated the ball for a lot of the game. The only thing I'm really disappointed about tonight is that Pogba, Morrison and Kiko were all poor. Other than that, it just isn't that important.

I too laugh at the Gibson scapegoating. He is a poor player, but he played okay tonight and was far from the worst United player.

I think the issue with Gibson is that he played, not how.

He's not in the clubs future, he's out there to try and get a better deal from another club in January.

So what? He still put in more effort than most of the rest of the team. He's been guilty of dossing in games before but not tonight. He's also, right now, a better option than Pogba.

The squad is there to be used.

That's the problem though. The benchmark has been set by the likes of Xavi, Iniesta, Ozil, Xabi Alonso, Schweinsteiger, Yaya Toure, etc. Any of these players would displace Carrick.

    indeed, 100%.

i was merely scoffing at the notion that the man is useless.

one person mentioned the Champions League Final? he, Rooney and maybe Vidic were the only ones to really come out of that with much credit FFS.

the abuse he gets is ludicrous. i'm not a big fan at all, but much like Lucas used to be made a scapegoat by our supporters, Carrick is for Utd too, and it's lunacy in the extreme. case in point, in the Chelsea game earlier in the season...he dared pass a ball backwards when he came on (in an effort to calm the game down i might add, in the midst of Chelsea piling forward because Utd kept losing the ball in bad areas), and he got fúcking booed by the crowd.

people conveniently forget things like last season's run-in where he was your best midfielder; at the most crucial time in the season.

he's not brilliant by any means, not by a long shot, and i've long said that for Utd to compete with the very best he needs to be improved upon, absolutely, but he's anything but useless, or whatever other hyperbolic slur people want to put on him.

I think everyone knows he's not useless, its an overused term used due to his inconsistencies. Take it with a pinch of salt.

Was he really that much of a vital crucial player in our midfield in these games (Manchester Uniteds run in from March)?

    19 March 2011 Bolton Wanderers H 1 – 0
    2 April 2011 West Ham United A 4 – 2
    9 April 2011 Fulham H 2 – 0
    19 April 2011 Newcastle United A 0 – 0
    23 April 2011 Everton H 1 – 0
    1 May 2011 Arsenal A 0 – 1
    8 May 2011 Chelsea H 2 – 1
    14 May 2011 Blackburn Rovers A 1 – 1

The CC should be used to blood youngsters who have a future at the club or we should play a strong squad in the competition. He and Diouf have for sale signs around their necks, I just don't see how it serves the club long-term playing them in first team games.

Not the lads fault and he had a decent game but that's how I feel.

I'd be inclined to agree with you on that statement for the most part, but Evans was blatantly fouled with a shove in the back that made sure he had no chance of defending the ball properly.

Even so, yet again Evans was swinging out of the attackers shirt so could have been a penalty. I've never seen a defender do it so much. Shows bad positioning in my opinion.

I think Giggs was United's most important midfielder in the run in. Also it is actually extremely difficult to define the "best"? The midfield unit that Carrick, Giggs and Rooney were a part of worked very well. Park and Valencia were vital as well. It was a team effort. Carrick played very well against Chelsea in the Champions League, but Giggs was the vital presence in terms of cutting edge.

Carrick is obviously not useless, but a lot of people complaining about him are not actually saying he is useless. It is very unfair on people making decent posts to have them lobbed into a group with people "hyperbolic slurs". Every thread has hyperbolic slurs, it seems to be par for the course in soccer discussions.

As for last night, it was a very poor performance. But these things happen. It is not the first time they lost to a lower division team in the League Cup. It is not a sign of an impending apocalypse.

Yes Gibson was playing. Did allright actually.

IMO Johnny Evans is one of the worst defenders around for a top 4 side in the Premiership.
He is NOT a UTD class player and should be sold asap.
His positioning is shocking, his aerial ability isnt much. He is a liability and has been shown up way too often.
Cant stand seeing the man on the starting 11.

Fergie is no fool, and has always been prepared to change the team. I think he began that transition when he got rid of the likes of Brown and O'Shea. Between January and next Summer, I would expect a few more players to leave. Gibson will almost certainly be gone. Park is another player who seems to be slipping down the pecking order. If Giggs doesn't call it a day, I could possibly see Fletcher leaving too.

As for who to bring in? Well, I'd like to see more of Cleverley. It doesn't surprise me at all that the end to United's brilliant form at the start of the season coincided with him getting crocked. I am a big fan of him and I think he brings a lot to your team in terms of athleticism, mobility, but also the ability to run at a player and to pick out a pass. I think it might only take one player to change United. Javi Martinez at Bilbao is a top player who could be that person. He has the physicality for the Premier League, doesn't go missing and can actually pass the ball. He'd be my man.

Maybe you need glasses? He shoved Evans from behind with two hands, it's a foul anywhere else on the pitch, wouldn't matter if he had any positional awareness, he still wouldn't have been able to do much about it, he was taken out of it at a key moment when the free kick was taken. I really don't see why we're even having this discussion tbh.

He's a shocking player, but I don't think he could have defended that any better under the circumstances.
