    Hey Sashafierce,
I'm heading over myself for January too, wherebouts you starting?
I'm starting in Cairns and backpacking down the East Coast.

I would recommend you check out some of the hostel booking/rating sites.

    http://www.hostelworld.com/
    http://www.yha.com.au/hostels/nsw/sydney-surrounds/

Search for your hostels, and see what previous visitors have said.
That's probably the only way to find out the cleanest ones.

Best of luck in your trip!! :-)

Here are the ones I used in the past 6 months
sydney: Wake Up, clean but expansive $30/night
byron bay: Loved Aquarius right in the town
frazer isl, Did a camping trip with Dingos from Rainbow beach
magnetic isl, Base hostel. The views are AMAZING
    townsville,Didn't stay overnight
cairns, Calypso but it's a bit out. Have heard good things about Shennanigans
bondi , Never stayed over night
    airlie beach Nomads= super clean
and surfers paradise didn't stay there.

Hope this helps. Don't go to Global waterfront in Cairns as they've had bed bug problems.

Hostelworld is the best way to check it all out

Base hostels are always fun. The organise loads of events so its super easy to meet people. I loved the one in Airlie Beach, it was like a mini apartment with only 4 ppl per room.
