hey i have posted here a couple of times about my springer i adopted back in august.

just lately it has happened that he is being left on his own more than he was,
its not going to be forever, just the way things are working at work at the moment.

he HATES being on his own, and most definately cannot be left outside alone. he just cries and cries. so i leave him inside.
he gets 30 - 40 mins walk in morn on those days he is left alone, and then an hour in evening, or vice versa, depending on work.

doggie day care sounds perfect but i cant go northside with him, its just to far!
does anyone know anywhere or anyone that does this on the southside?
rathfarnham to bray really would be ideal?

You might be able to find someone your direction who would mind him in their home?

we send our two here: http://www.bbboardingkennels.com/index.php. We've only had our dogs since January and sent them to the kennels we used to send our last dog. But the last time we sent them there for 10 days and they came back in a state (the youngest one wasn't 100% housetrained and she obviously had accidents and walked in the mess, but hadn't been cleaned up at all - I don't mind a muddy dog on my return, but not one covered in pee and poo!!). After that, we found BB kennels and send them there for daycare and short term stays. They absolutely love the place and come back exhausted. The owner treats them like her own dogs and expects them to behave, which has been great for them seeing as they're young and bold as brass!

You should make a short list and visit a few kennels because you'll know the right one by the feel of the place.

Ok... The place in sandyford is newly opened I popped in to see it on Saturday, they are just two seconds away from the beacon hotel... It looks great but it wouldnt suit my cocker it's a warehouse where all the dogs are kept, with toys etc while i liked it I think the fact that Ive used a dog walker for the past two years I suppose puts me off the confined space idea ;( ... But you should take a look it looks good.

I've used a girl called Rhona of www.walkies.ie for the past two years and she has made a massive difference to our lives... And more importantly my cockers life... She collects him around 10am two days per week (yes she has a key- totally trust her) she collects him and a couple if other dogs brings them up the mountains drops him back around 4pm so it's a whole day to him etc... He's loves her, and he gets exercise and socialised too.., soo all in all it's the best option for us... She's lives in step aside but collects dogs from all over the city, I highly recommend her! Best of luck!

If your dog's gone from 10 til 4 and they collect and drop off dogs from from all over the place and then drive up the mountains how much time is spent walking and not just rattling around in a cage in a van?
Maybe the dog's tired at night from the stress of the cage and not hours of mountain air. You hear so many horror stories of dog-walkers not actually walking the dogs at all:-(

Well... firstly he’s not a in a cage....my dog wouldnt get in a cage, he’s terrified of them... i didn’t crate train him as he doesn’t like being locked anywhere..

Secondly she isn’t just a random dog walker, it’s a company she runs.... i got references from her before I started using her... i live in north Wicklow, she has just move to stepaside so i can’t use her anymore... plus she used to collect mu guy and 4 others,, bring them to the mines in Rathmichael. (which is 15 mins away from where i live)... and bring them on a 2 hours walk / run... my dog wasn’t just left in the back of the van... he would be damp, dirty and wrecked when he came back..bits of twigs hanging off him etc... and cockers are very vocal whiney dogs... every time she collect him he would run over to her... he adored her...jumped into the back of the van no bother.... if he wasn’t happy he wouldn’t have gotten in.... he’s very choosey......so maybe you have heard stories of dogs not being walked etc... but not all dog walkers are bad ones.. i cannot recommend her enough!

now please dont be attacking cocker5 , her opinion is really valuable, she gave me fantastic advice about my Cockers when I had just got them and at the time where I was unsure about a few things and needed to learn more. It was probably a few issues due to my confidence as I was inexperienced having dogs.

I listened to everything she said and I cannot be grateful enough, I have the best behaved girls, thanks cocker5 !!!! :-)

    Falabo..

Thanks a million for your post :D im glad i could help and if you ever need advice again please dont hesitate to contact me... how are you two adoreable cocker getting on?

cyco... as i already stated my previous post the rest of the time she collects other dogs (im sure you understand this takes time :D)... she used to pick my guy up first on her way up form where she lived in wicklow... then colect other dogs...possibly 3/4 depending on the day.... then the walk... (off lead plus swiiming on some days)...... then drop him home last...after she drooped home the other dogs...... so yes it does all add up...

tk123... she has little harnesses in the van to keep them safe... so they are secure without being locked in a cage...

anyway i dont know why i have to justify why i found my dog wlaker great.. but i did its a fact... Im just sorry she moved to dublin.. now im trying to find someone local and its hard to find someone i trust... :o

She also does home stay kenneling too.. which i have also used.... OMG maybe she locked my dog is her van or garage all day then too???? hhhhmmmmm .....I think not!

anyway OP... best if luck with your dog all i was trying to do is recommend somone i have used who i found great.... but the world is full of cyncial people.... not all dog walkers leave a dog locked in a car all day... some of them actually like dogs and like walking them!

cocker5 thanks for that am going to check out that place in sandyford this weekend.

i would prefer a dog walker because he would walk, sorry RUN, all day long! i was worried about the security of it, having to give key, alarm code out etc. but seeing as you gave rhona such a glowing reference i'm going to check her out!

how much does she charge by the way?

I would recommend checking out Positive Dog Training in Sandyford- excellent facility run by two great people hugely involved in animal welfare and training. I have my guy in DTI daycare, its closest to me, and it made a huge difference in him...because there are other dogs there and they get to play, run round and socialise properly all day. Daycare really tires them out as well as keeping them socialised so its win win.

Only you can decide whats best for your dog and situation, but definitely check out a few options. Good luck!

I haven't seen the premises in Sandyford, as they're only just opened, but know the two owners from their work with dogs and animal welfare, and cannot recommend them highly enough. I would trust them with all and any of my dogs, just wish we didn't live on the other side of the country:rolleyes:
