connecting tv to stereo query

Hi folks.. I recently bought a new tv and want to connect my stereo to it to imporove the sound quality..my problem is this--there are any amount of rga connectors on the tv, but the stereo only has 1 audio (black) and 1 video (yellow) input connection ..is there any adaptor type yoke that would enable me to set up a stereo connection between the 2? The tv has a headphone jack, if that's of any use..

Any advice would be appreciated,

Does the stereo have an AUX setting for an input source? If so, there should be a red and a black RCA connector to connect the Aux input to. There shouldn't just be a black.

As i said, there is only 1 audio (black) and 1 video (yellow) point on the back of the stereo,there is no red point. Should I get a splitter cable ie an rca cable with 1 black connector to two connectors red and black ?

I couldn't say without seeing a photo or looking up a handbook for it. Just one audio channel and one video RCA makes no sense to me so I'll pass.

Wouldn't it be simpler to tell us the make/model of the TV and the Stereo ?

I presume by "rga" you're referring to RCA Phono connectors ? As these can be used for either video, analogue audio and/or SPDIF digital audio there is no way you could expect to get a sensible answer here without being specific!

A bit more detail and we can have you enjoying sound as it should be enjoyed

As far as I can see I am out of luck. Audio out on the TV is opitcal only. Don't see optical on the amp.

Anyone know a way around this?

However, for a lot less you could just get a Headphone to RCA cable and use the headphone output. You would just want to set the headphone volume on the TV to 80-90% of max volume to avoid distortion.

Cheers. I think I'll go with the converter. The amp and speakers are pretty good so I think it'll be worth it.

EDIT: I see what you mean now by the second option (thought you just meant headphones!). Would the converter pass better sound or would both be the same?

I think the sound would be the same. You could find out how good the sound is via the headphone socket for next to nothing. If you weren't happy with it, you could then get the converter in the hope it would be better.

A possible advantage of the headphone socket is that the volume would likely be controllable via the remote, though probably a bit of a fiddle if it's anything like mine.

It's a sky box I have which outputs sound via optial so I think I'll go for the converter.
