I am pretty sure he would, since it seems odd that snow is being reported when temp is 4.0c at the station with a Td of 2.0c. Similar to a report from the same station earlier this morning as well when snow was reported under similar readings. Only explanation I can give is that any snow was very brief and occurred during an intense downdraft or something. (with a high gust of 49kts this is a possibility) so I doubt any snow observed lasted any more than a few seconds if at all.

I don't think anyone is in a position to disregard any met station. Snow has been reported at sea level. Simple fact as far as i'm concerned.

I am sure he will be equally interested in the report from Harps aswell.

No snow here either, very windy out though. Can't see me getting snow.
Wouldn't bet on it. Thought I'd check outside one last time and the current hail shower has covered the driveway and my car. Who knows what's in store!

I am not disregarding the observation at all, just trying to give an explanation as I just think it is odd that snow (recent snow on actual report) was reported under such readings.

10 minute snow shower in Omagh there, just stopped now. Lovely big flakes, was sticking too. :)

Down draught is probably the most likely explanation as you said.

Thermometer is showing -2 outside here (just out of Waterford city towards kilmeaden), not a cloud in the sky though.

This is about the UK the last two winters, but it really is a very interesting watch - http://www.channel4.com/programmes/britains-big-freeze/4od

Finner Camp reporting a 45kt gust, a temp of 4c but a lower Td of 0.3c, and reporting rain. Odd.

Currently 5.0C, dew point of 2.8C in Cork city. Doesn't look too good right now, but there's always hope.
Should be heading to the gym at around 6:30am, so I'll report back around then.
    G'night all!

EDIT: Valentia tephigram showing uppers around -4/5C for midnight.

Depends on intensity of the shower aswell. Maybe just a light shower without a down draught. It is very windy off the west coast. Near gale force wind in fact.

Gusty rain shower just passed through here - Tuam, 39m asl. Still waiting for the snow that was promised..

Yep, Finner reported just trace while Belmullet reported 0.5mm.

Nothing odd about that really

The Belmullet observation sounds odd of course. But as has been mentioned already, probably due to downdraft for a short period of time.

****observer looks out window and notes snowfall .... writes "recent snow" in notepad and goes to PC to update observation**** .... meanwhile ... sensors send info automatically at either predetermined intervals or in some cases (wind) on average and updates the same database for that hour ..

Or something, I'm not feeling eloquent right now :P

Not odd in itself of course, just that Finner's readings at the time would have been more conducive for snow than Belmullet's readings.

Oddity is a relative, rather than absolute concept in this case I think.

I get what you mean by odd now DE :o

the diff in the temp and "DP" (stop saying Td, it;s just gonna piss people off lol) with rain falling...

well I suppose that explains belmullet too .. the atmophere is unstable below 850hpa and swirling on every axis?

There seems to be a stream of showers heading for us Konman from the NW at the moment, any hope we have would be in them before morning. Temp is 1.8c here in town so fingers crossed.

Only sleety muck here, next shower looks more intense, wind picking up a bit too.

    and also above! :)

Edit: Just remembered that Finner is also a fully automated station so observation was not observed by human eyes (if that makes sense!)

Temp was sort of yo yoing here all evening and still is within a very small degree, back up to 2.2c at the moment. I don't think the flat terrain of the landscape is helping us either as most of the snow reports seem to be from hillier areas. Anyway, just got very windy here again so another shower moving in. We may be luckier with this one.

    Wrong.

Once you're sub -5 you've got one of the main ingredients for a delicious snow cake.

The snow is falling where the 850hpa temperature is below -5 therefore all the ingredients in those areas are in place (just about). It is forecast to get colder again as the night goes on in your part of the country so you have a chance. Anyway those who see snow enjoy! Night.

Well ok, if you put it like that, that makes more sense ;)

Lordy, it's trying to snow, but it's just too darn wet (Drogheda). :(

Guy's - It is snowing on East coast of Northern Ireland at sea level.

Also snowing in Lurgan pretty hard in mid Ulster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,138 ✭✭✭snaps

Nothing to report from South East Mayo. Not even any wind. Got awoken by a hefty hail shower at about 3am, but thats about it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 921 ✭✭✭MiNdGaM3

5.0C, dew point of 3.1C and the balcony is just wet, no snow overnight. Ah well, suppose that's what many people are waking up to this morning.

Very windy and cold but no snow in Rathfarnham.

Was snowing in Derry overnight, still on the ground.

Pretty sure I heard more thunder here last night, lights are gone this morning anyway.

Heavy snow on the hills overnight as well, only a grass covering of what is probably hail here but my path back to letterkenny is blocked by a jackknifed lorry at the moment.
