Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Superplay Blu Ray, DVD, VHS etc...

Does anyone here collect Superplay discs or cassettes? I've not really gone in with the intention of collecting them, mainly due to the insane prices they command. However I've accumulated a few now due to them being packed in with games or because I've picked them up cheap.

So far I have (to the best of my knowledge):

    Psyvariar 2
    Espgaluda
    DoDonPachi Dai Ou Jou
    Capcom Fighting Jam

    I may have more, I haven't looked.

I've been studying the DoDonPachi Dai Ou Jou DVD today and it really is great reference material. Even the world's best recommend using them for study, regardless of if you are a shooting game fame, fighting game fan and so on.

I think I'm going to start collecting these, how about you, do you own any of these? Have you used any to improve your game?

I could do with an Ibara disc!

Just an FYI incase you're interested, there's a Ketsui superplay dvd & booklet (€150) and Gradius V dvd (€40) over on AO at the moment. The Ketsui one seems particularly crazily priced.

The Gradius DVD is actually supposed to be up there with Battle Garegga as the two best Superplay sets ever constructed.

I'm actually going to get the Ibara: The Lunatic set. Well worth the money for what's in the bundle and lord knows I could do with learning some strategies for it!

The Ketsui one is stupidly priced, however so are the very few Battle Garegga ones I've seen.

The Dai Ou Jou one I was watching yesterday was good. Useful tips to study contained within. I wouldn't buy it separately though as it's only a run (ok, an AMAZING run) of both loops plus Hibachi and the final, true Hibachi.

It's followed up with a montage of boss fights but slowed down so you can spot the incredible techniques used throughout. However it is only this material and nothing else, so as a game pack-in, it's great, but I wouldn't buy it separately.

By the way, is the Ketsui booklet with the Superplay anywhere near as drool-worthy as your Ketsui Limited Edtion booklet? :)

Who needs Razzle, Hot n Hefty or 60+ when you've a Ketsui strategy pamphlet and artbook? :pac:

Battle Garegga VHS superplay for anyone that's interested -

Came across it on my usual (and failing!) hunt for Garegga!

Holy moly! Would love that. Shame I have no VHS player. :(

I've only heard of these DVDs.
Are they purely shmups as played by scorers? Or do they showcase techniques too?

On a similar vein, any 3rd Strike player should look up the Kuroda DVDs (friend showed them to me, it's basically 3S god Kuroda getting 1hr+ win streaks using various characters).

They are mostly full runs played by very talented 'superplayers'. There's a lot of close up shots, replays and tips that show you how the pros do it which double as very useful study tools to help improve your game. Some discs feature official world record runs. One was only beaten recently by a guy who managed to 1cc a DoDonPachi title after 7 years (see the SHMUP PORN thread)!

Some come with lovely art and/or strategy guides and in some cases soundtrack cd's and more. They can be very expensive though and may not be to everyone's taste.
