basically at the moment i have a home phone and broadband package with eircom. its starting to break me though and im getting rid of the land line after christmas. i want to keep the broadband but i was just wondering is there anybody other than eircom that i could use that would be cheaper and be just as good if not better?

    thanks

You can't get rid of the land line and keep the broadband on it. It won't work.

Other ISPs are cheaper, though there are often drawbacks.

balls to that then. might just have to get rid of the lot - E180 roughly for two months for home phone and broadband. extortionate

If you shop around you'd likely be able to get that for 100e or even 80e for two months with other providers, you'll still have a phone line and dsl.

I'm on a uncapped package with UTV and its costing me approx 110e every two months,

If you are in Carlow town you can get UPC, so no landline required.
Otherwise you can look for wireless providers in your area and
    see what they offer.

Yes you can, Magnet are now offering broadband only packages over the phoneline without actually having to have the phone.

You still have to have a land line. The package is DSL and if your line is poor or you live more than a kilometre from the exchange you don't stand a cat in hell's chance of getting 24Mb

The line is still there, they just don't let you use it. It's only available on their LU exchanges, because they don't have to pay the full line rental to eircom on those lines. It's not really free line rental either, it's just included in the price. There's still rental being paid.
