Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Folks

Here's a quick Poultry question I'm looking to get answered -

If I was to farm turkeys from August to December on a free-range operation, would I be able to to a total clean-up of the facility and use the same facility for chicken production from January to July?

When I get your inputs I'll share the response I got from a state advisory organisation ..................

I don't see any reason why you couldn't.

I'd be interested to see the response though. I really don't think that the state advisory service has much of a clue about poultry anyway.

you will be able to get the fixed structure cleaned fully alright. Its quiet common for commercial broiler farmers to put in turkeys for the Christmas market. So the fixed structure can be power washed and disinfected. the Free range area poses more of a difficulty. However, considering the time of the year the change over occurs (frost and ice in winter) not many organisms will survive outdoors. There are powders you can get to shake out on the ground that will deal with Cocci.
By state advisory if you mean Teagasc then the only ones I would listen to are the guys in Athenry. Only ones that have a dept that deal specifically with Poultry.

    Thanks for the inputs.

I asked Teagasc, sending an email to a poultry specialist I've been dealing with for some time, and who has been really good.
Got an email back saying that the specialist is no longer with Teagasc and that due to the employment restrictions they do not have a replacement and cannot answer questions on poultry.

Jeez - even now my blood boils when I think about it. The whole of the Teagasc organisation does not have a resource who can answer a simple poultry question, and when someone leaves they cannot find a way to cover that person's work. I despair of the public sector mentality and if this is the way they're going to approach the required cut-backs then we're all screwed.

Public sector used to be paid less than private, but the job security and defined benefit pension was the compensating factor. Now they have higher pay than private sector, job security, defined benefit pension ........... and the ability to give the rest of us the finger when cuts are introduced!
