You need to be incredibly careful when buying Newfie pup. Some good friends of mine did a lot of research & went to a top breeder. The Pup was supposed to of been Vet checked & the parents were screened etc. Within a few weeks the pup started coughing & they bought it to my Vet who diagnosed a terminal heart problem. For a few months the pup defied the Vets diagnosis & appeared to be improving but then she died.

The problem was that the original Vet may of missed the defect or a Vet check may not of been done. But also there are cases where this type of disorder can be very hard to detect in young puppies without very specialist equipment - doppler blood flow measurement.

So you really need to be very sure & if it were me I would only go to one of two or three breeders.

Contact the Newfoundland Club of Ireland and they will put you in touch with some breeders who might be planning a litter soon or that might have pups at the moment.

    hi ,
i was just looking on done deal ( i know dont go near it) there was a person with add for newfies in wexford it states "Our vet cert states the puppy is perfectly healthy and is clear of any heart and knee problems.IKC Registered, 5 generation Pedigree" but it has pics and you tube video, when you watch video on you tube there is other videos from same source with many different dogs . is this a puppy farmer or whats the story

I would avoid it like the plague. Take Andreac's advice & as a further safeguard get your own Vet to examine a Pup before the family meet it. There are other threads here that will advise you on the correct steps when buying a puppy.

Ask for scores from the kennel club and see what they say. The answer to that will tell you if they are puppy farmers or not.

Sounds very dodgy if you ask me. Firstly you don't check them for knee problems, its hip and elbow scoring so why they say knees is beyond me. Sounds like they dont know what they are talking about.
Secondly, you cant check a pup for these problem as you cant get them scored til they are at least a year old. Its the parents that have to be hip and elbow scored.

My opinion, dont touch this so called breeder....
