Decided not to go to London today with my return flight due into Glasgow Airport at about 18:00.

Really windy and wet earlier, now it is calm (I presume before the storm!)

    Latest UKMO warning.
    Red Warning of Wind08 Dec 2011, 10:00

    Valid from - 08 Dec 2011, 10:00
    Valid to - 08 Dec 2011, 21:00

Winds will continue to increase during Thursday morning with severe gales developing across many northern and central parts of the UK, and some particularly damaging storm force winds likely to affect parts of Scotland.

The risk of disruption is considered highest across central and southern Scotland where there is a significant risk of damage to trees and structures. The police are also advising that conditions for travel will be extremely poor and that travellers are likely to experience significant delays.

Winds will ease from the west through Thursday evening.

Malin mean and gust speeds lower again slightly. Not much change.

    Load this animation fully.

It provides a really excellent timelapse of the storm developing. Certainly looks a good deal further north than anticipated.

Temperature slowly dropping here. Was 9.5, now 7.5.

I see there is major disruption from heavy snow around the Grampians and Scottish Highlands. Roads, schools...everything closed down.

    Temp here down to 5.7c (7.1 @ 1000, 9.7 @ 0900)

Windy here but nothing exceptional, always find these storms are very anti-climactic unless you live right on the coast. Max gust of 93km/hr which I suppose is pretty good for an inland station

Temperature dropping nicely though so hopefully some wintry showers later, already had some hail a while ago.

    Temp 6.2C, dp only 2.2C

That ship report I mentioned has updated at 10z in same position but now with 78 knot sustained winds. Not an encouraging report if you live in western Scotland (or if you're on that ship).

The 06z GFS has somewhat upgraded the cold advection rate for this afternoon and evening, would expected some powerful streamers to develop from a NW direction hitting most of Ulster in about 3-4 hours. Not sure I agree on the track, looked about what was expected, the rate of deepening was extreme and this produced the peak in wind gusts across the north earlier.

I may have to abandon ship here fairly soon too, watch satellite for streamer formation would be my last words to the crew.

I tend to look on extreme ship reports as sceptical as they are often taken at much greater heights than the standard 10 metres, plus the up and down motion of the ship in the high seas can cause erroneously high anenometer readings. The 78 knots seem very excessive when other readings and forecasts are taken into account.

Meanwhile, on land, the strongest winds so far in the Hebrides are

    Tiree (12 m) W 53 gust 75 knots
    Islay W 46 gust 62
    Campbeltown (13 m) SW 43 gust 62 kts
    Dundee (6 m) SW 41 gust 60 kts

The TAFs for this afternoon forecast peak winds of

    Tiree 55 gust 78 kts
    Islay 47 gust 70 kts
    Campletown 45 gust 70 kts
    Stornaway 55 gust 75 kts

The wind was very bad this morning here, at the moment the winds are intermittent, it can go relatively calm to stormy.

Same here Pangea. Was quite calm a while ago with blue sky and sunshine.

68KT in Malin @ 12. Barring a squall line or a 'sting jet' thats the worst of it over I'd say.

Live streaming video of a guy on the road going to document this in Scotland. :D
    http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=weatherevents;sess=

He says he is in Fife at the moment and won't be able to make it to the southwest because of bridge closures, not sure exactly where he is headed.

This guy is heading to Anstruther, Fife.

Glen Ogle in scotland showed sustained winds of near 70mph (60knots)
    and a gust of 104mph (90knots) @ UTC1100

I've just recorded a gust of 67mph on my Kestrel, the telegraph poles are swaying side to side here in Downings. We are so exposed and no shelter. No rain or hailstones since this morning.

Winds have eased here in the last hour. UKMO is reporting rising pressure at all the NI stations.
