Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Can you come with any inventive suggestions to avoid paying this tax?

Pay it. No one forced you to buy a house

No wonder most of the Germans rent

Pay them..... with chocolate euros. They'll never know!

Firstly, I like your sneaky geebag line..

Secondly, is it just for residential property?

Could you declare your property a wildlife sanctuary/zoo?*

    Would that work?

    * You may need to buy some lions, tigers, bears and ****! T&C may apply.

    Still daylight robbery though =p

Pay it, but steal €110 worth of heating oil to compensate.

    Nice retort

I could have easily done the same to your OP.

This property tax is a load of crap. I don't own my own house, I doubt I'll ever be able to in this country anyway. But why didn't they raise the property tax on peoples second homes and then introduce larger and larger tax on every additional home they own.

If you rent you still pay property tax (its passed on to you). In France they have two separate property taxes, one for the owner and one for who actually lives in it

Its fcuking stupid that you have to pay every year to be allowed continue living in your "own" house. A mad popular idea by governments because its hard to avoid paying but I still think its morally wrong that governments would make people pay every year for their own house.

To answer the question, become a member of our friendly travelling community. They'll probably give you a free council house (property tax exempt) to stop you causing trouble

because the amount of extra resources it would take for this dumb bunch of idiots to this, we'd end up wasting even more money !

They tried that before... and people put bricks where the windows should have been according to the plans, you see many of these old buildings around Dublin.

    QUOTE:

Window tax was introduced in England, Ireland and Wales in 1696 and in Scotland in 1748. It was actually a tax on houses, scaled according to the number of windows in the house. In 1696 the occupier of every inhabited dwelling was charged a flat rate of 2s per year. In addition those with 10-20 windows paid an 4s, and those with more than 20 windows 8s.

Cottages, that is houses too poor to pay poor and church rates, were exempt. From 1709 the tax increased for large houses: those with 20 to 30 windows were to pay 10s, and a new upper band with over 30 windows paid 20s. There were increases in the tax in 1747, 1758, 1761, 1766, 1784 and 1825, before protests led to its abolition in 1851. The qualifying level also dropped in 1766 to 7 windows before rising slightly to 8 windows in 1825.

The revision of the tax in 1747 aimed to counter those who had sought to evade the tax by building two or more windows within one frame. Each light was to be counted as a separate window if the partition between them was more than 12 inches wide.

They had a tax like that years ago and the only way people got out of it was take out the windows and take the roof off. Ruined some of the best houses around.

    From above article:

The charge will be waived for people on mortgage interest supplement as well as those living on unfinished housing estates which will be named by the Department of the Environment.

^ Knock down a random house in the estate, remove a few lamposts

    Result = unfinished estate?

Great idea!! . . .I, for one, will be the first to wish you the best of luck with this venture! . . .

. . .I'd also like to take this opportunity to remind you that accommodation for your family in B&B's when the temperature is below 0 degrees, when it's raining, icy, snowy, or windy, may slightly exceed the €100 saving. . .

Most of the French rent also, if I'm not mistaken. . .it isn't about whose idea it is, it's about how good is the idea. . .

But who owns the houses all these French and Germans are renting? That's right....rich people!

Lets all buy houses and rent them out!

IT's for the services that you get... or at leat that's what they tell you. Not that strange either....Businesses pay thousands or sometimes even tens of thousands in rates on buildings they own.

Refuse to pay it,plain and simple. many developers owe millions, even billions and will never have to repay it, so why should anyone pay a measly €100. stand up for a change. if we dont it will eventually be €1000

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,080 ✭✭✭foxinsox

I've been reading up on this..

So far the axel and wheels seems to be the best option..

    Unless..

This €100 property tax is for homeowners.

I don't own my home (yet).

So when the bill comes, I'll forward it on to my bank.
