OK first off you need either WinRAR or 7zip (I have used both and they both work) you can get them here in the links i will post below
    1: 7zip http://www.7-zip.org/
    2: WinRAR http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm

I recommend 7zip because it is free and a full programme.

Secondly you need the mod there are three place that I usually use they are the following
1: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forum (scroll down a bit to find the thread "Minecraft Modding"
    2: http://www.planetminecraft.com/resources/mods/
    3: http://www.minecraftdl.com/category/minecraft-mods/

Download the mod you like and then go to your start button (Windows obviously) and follow these simple steps.

1: Type in %appdata% and hit enter
2: When you are in your roaming folder you should see a folder named .minecraft
3: Enter it and you will see more folders enter the one named bin and then right click the jar file named minecraft and open it with either 7zip or WinRAR then you are in the minecraft file that everybody talks about and everybody gets confused about.

While you're in there, make a Shortcut of your .minecraft folder and (if necessary) the Minecraft launcher and possibly Screenshots too.

Now (if there isn't one already) Explore your Start Menu, click on Programs, create a New Folder, rename it Minecraft, open it up, and dump the above shortcuts in there. Voila! Your user account now has shortcuts to those three things giving fast access from the Start Menu! ;)

    Linux is dead easy.

    /home/.minecraft/<whatever your looking for>

Easiest way to find it is to open up your file browser in your home folder, enable show hidden folder by Ctrl+H and your away.

Whatever your archive manager is should be able to open jars as they are just fancy zip files. File roller is the default in GNOME....
