Quick Q, hopefully someone has tested this before.
I am on a mission to reduce character count in an sms notification.

Does anyone know if any phone models cannot turn a url into a clickable link?
Do all models need the http:// in front to work?

    Thanks,
    Alan

Quick follow up based on research in the office.

Sony and Huawei phones are the only models to make a link without http:// click able.
Them, android and iphone are the only ones to display the special characters from here http://copypastecharacter.com/

You've actually covered two separate topics, although both are ultimately OS/firmware dependant.

The first is URL parsing and this involves the phone parsing through a standard text message and identifying a sub-string that is a URL. While some are clever in this and can identify a URL without a leading http://, most (older) handsets use this as the 'identifier' of one.

Another potential approach is to send the SMS, not as a standard SMS, but as a WAP SI. This essentially is the 'push' component of an MMS and as such is supported by most phones today. Also, as it is WBXML byte-encoded it tends to be very lightweight.

The second issue is of character support and this varies wildly from handset model to model and even between the same model depending upon region of distribution. Extended character support can be enabled in SMS messages, but this still is dependant on the model and also will likely result in a loss of message length.
