Recommed book or DVD for aspiring Film-Maker

Hi,

Hope this is the right thread.

My partner has finished a 3 year course in TV and Film studies. I was wondering anyone can recommend a good book or a DVD on film-making and/or editing.

I'm looking on Amazon, but there are so many options I don't know what to choose.

I got the Mike Figgis digital film making book, it's more of an interesting short read than anything. He goes into the background of old film and how the equipment evolved into digital and what makes digital so good. Very short book and pretty cheap, more of a read on the bog type book.

There seems to be a few different versions of that book, is the American just the hollywood version? I'm looking on Amazon UK trying to decide between the UK and US versions.
