i right click my computer, and it still says 512mb of ram when it should now be 4gb.
I went onto crucial's website, and the scanner recognised the RAM ok.

Why not showing the 4gb there? The pc turned on fine. Its not any faster though.. slow as f***!

    Thanks

Which motherboard have you, and what RAM configuration (2x2Gb?)?

Restart and press F2 to go into the bios to see if it's showing there. If not it's not pushed in properly or it's the wrong type of RAM for the PC. You can try them one at a time to test if they are being detected but they work best in pairs.
Have a look at the RAM stick that was in it and make sure the new RAM is the exact same.

Will do as soon as backing up files finishes.

The RAM that was in it was:
    256MB 1Rx16 PC2 -4200U-444- 11 -C1

What part of this can be different/Needs to be the same?

Crucial told me that this ram was compatible!

I'm backing everything up now, then going to install Windows 7.
    This pc is now xp.

    That might waken it up.

    update:

The RAM that was in it was:
    256MB 1Rx16 PC2 -4200U-444- 11 -C1

    The New RAM:
    1GB 1Rx8 PC2-5300U - 555 - 12 - ZZ

    I hit Bios.
    It says installed memory 3GB
    Memory speed 533MHz

In each one under Type it says: Unbuffered.
    Organisation x8

    So?

Chances are the old and new won't work together. Only put in the new ones if your still not detecting all of them it may be a problem with dust. In which case you'll need to buy an air duster - do this outdoors.

    Win7 32bit will only recognize 3GB of ram,for 4GB or more you need 64bit
