Wonder if Ballyroe Heights Hotel and interested locals would be interested in starting a clean-up of the tracks from their side towards Tralee. The benefit of a walk from Tralee to the hotel for a snack/coffee stop is huge !

The illegal squatters blocking the line at multiple locations may be an issue...

Everyone is aware of this 'blocking the line' issue, BUT starting a local community clean-up from the other side will certainly place more pressure to join-the-dots so to speak and it would highlight those few "squatters" even more.

It's a win-win situation for Ballyroe Heights Hotel and shows support for their customers and local community.

Also there are not as many 'illegal squatters' to deal with on that short section of the line (Ballyroe to Mounthawk), as there are on the entire line to Fenit, so it should be successful in the shorter term. The knock-on effects of this strategy would also be encouraging for the Fenit Greenway.

Priority is being given to the Valentia line greenway firstly and then to the Abbeyfeale to Listowel section of the North Kerry line. Considering the financial position of Kerry Co Co, it's simply not possible to push everything at once.

As things are, we're still waiting for funding for the Tralee-Ballyseedy greenway and that is through planning and shovel ready for quite some time now.

Is that oul farmer/town councillor still digging his heels in?

I see plenty of comments and thread views - but another summer of discontent looms

"Now is the winter of our discontent
    Made glorious summer by this son of York;
And all the clouds that lour'd upon our homes
In the deep bosom of the ocean buried."

Should they make a greenway out of the derelict Tralee-Blennerville railway?

It's not like anyone's going to re-start it. Locals don't care. How many years has it been since anything ran on it?

It might be a good idea to continue the walk behind the Rose hotel etc all the way to Blennerville although I guess they already have the canal path.

Continue the walk from behind the Aqua Dome to Ballymullen and onto 'Ballyseedy Wood'.

This is yet another walk 'in the works'. The section from Manor/Castlemaine Bridge to Ballyseedy Woods remains to be completed and is in the town plan ?

    GREAT NEWS

    http://traleetoday.ie/councillors-approve-plans-for-tralee-fenit-greenway/

The route – on lands in the ownership of Kerry County Council – will predominantly follow the railway corridor and works will be completed in one phase.
Councillors today (Monday) approved the development following consideration of a report on the 277 submissions received during the public consultation on the greenway.
A public information day was also held in Fenit on May 23 and was attended by approximately 200 people while the detailed plans for the route were made available in council offices and on the council website.

Don't get too excited yet. The Tralee-Ballyseedy Greenway received section 8 planning approval several years ago but construction has yet to begin due to a lack of funding. There are many greenway schemes in planning right around the country now competing for a limited pot of cash.

Being in the Council you should know, but I thought cycleways get priority in Europe (i.e. Tralee/Dingle road with cycle lane).

I am hopeful we're finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, but until there are shovels on the ground I won't get too excited.

From a funding perspective, a further substantial delay to the South Kerry Greenway from a likely legal challenge could work in this project's favour though.

There are objectors to the Fenit project as well. Both greenways could yet go down the Swanee or be delayed until god knows when.

Very different scenario to the South Kerry Greenway though as the land is already in public ownership.

Doesn't matter a jot to the objectors though. They dont care who owns it, as far as they're concerned it's theirs to squat on. They're still able to hold things up.

Do you see any link between this 'announcement' and what is happening tomorrow?

    Of course

I don't think this is coming as a major surprise - just as a gentle reminder before the election. But it's nice to see confirmation.

SUMMER 2020 (said he hopefully)....it's going to make an ideal route for our Tralee Triathlon Club !

A MARATHON RACE / IRON MAN / TRIATLON flat route (with a Fenit swim) is ideal.
