Exactly as the title says. Very poor visabilty going through the road works earlier, add to that some of the cones scattered, nearly had to thread my way through it. Any idea when they're going to be finished?

It really depends on the weather. They can't lay on ice/snow...

We can take this thread for discussing roadworks in the Gap. I have amended the title to reflect that.

Any posts about weather conditions should be posted in the White Christmas/Roads with snow thread 2011 thread

Ok. Maybe those in the know can explain why the new central line today looks like this

I'd imagine it's a temporary line as the surface isn't finished. It'll be after the holidays before there's any more work done at this stage.

There has been one of them yellow / orange lines in the middle of the road on a stretch of the Glenties / Ardara road for a few years now?

About a year or so and was just taken away just there a few weeks ago for new roadworks.

My guess is that it is intended to be a temporary line.

LOL. Aren't you suppose to keep to the right of a solid yellow line.

    :D

Why didn't they do it in white?

Looked kinda strange going through the gap last night. Even the cats eyes in the Center are orange. Looked like driving down a runway. :)

Can see that causing an accident. Really got to hand it to Donegal CoCo sometimes.

    To indicate that it's temporary?

Again the council tender to get usually NI companies in to do work at the worst time of the year, not just in traffic terms but when the weather doesn't suit the laying of road surfaces or visibility.

The cheapest quote is not necessarily the best and I always wondered why Donegals roads are done late in the year (off season) while the companies do NI roads in the North when they should be, in good weather. Then we usually find poor surfaces a month or two later.

This cheap skate service is not what we should be getting considering what we pay in Motor Tax, and particularly for a country that has fallen over itself to implement Health and Safety in every other aspect of business.

Its being done on the cheap and to spend allocations at the expense of everything else in my opinion. Doing this in winter may be cheaper but its certainly not better or safer and we pay huge road tax for the privilage

They surface all year round in NI too.

Companies are fighting over each other for the work. The Council are getting great value for money as the companies are taking the jobs at little over cost simply to get the work. Health and Safety plays a big part in all civil engineering these days...it doesn't matter if the work is in summer or winter.

I'll say it again - it's not being done any cheaper in the winter than in summer. It goes through a competitive tendering process. It's not always the cheapest price that gets the job either by-the-way.

No doubt the council will have the contractor back to fix it.

They were laying at a bad time of year...surface failures were almost inevitable.

If failures 'almost inevitable' then the contractor would have priced in for it, which would make the work dearer, which is bad value for money for the council/us.... why get the work done at that time of year?

They probably didn't price in for it. If they had then they wouldn't have got the job - it's a very competitive industry with four or five contractors all trying to outbid each other to get the work. That's what competitive tendering is all about. Why this time of year? I don't know for sure - end of financial year...trying to get the budget spent? Possibly?
