High Resolution External Monitor

I'm looking to get an external monitor for my laptop. It's an XPS m1330 with Nvidia 8400m gs graphics card. After a bit of research it seems that the max resolution it can support is 1900 x 1200, although finding very specific info is remarkable difficult. Also I have a HDMI output but no DVI.

With that in mind I'm looking at the Dell U2412M 24" IPS monitor. The price seems OK and the only drawback I can see is the missing HDMI input, which I think I can live with if I get an adapter.

I'll mostly use it for programming so my priority is screen real estate rather than colour correctness but it will serve as the only "TV" in the house so I think IPS is worth it.

Before I take the plunge I'd love to get some feedback on alternatives and possible drawbacks?

1900x1200 as a max is a smidge shy of 1080p which might be a problem for you which a high end monitor (as the native res is likely to be 1080p).

I have a similar dell in work (though slightly smaller and with a lower res) and it's perfect for coding. A lot of the lads prefer having two 4:3 monitors or a smaller 16:9 and one 4:3. Prefer the larger 16:9 myself.

When you say a smidge shy, do you mean that 1900x1200 is less than 1080p? My understanding was that 1080p meant 1900x1080?

I don't think this card can support dual monitors so I'm limited to making the one as big as possible!

    1920x1080.
