ive been using brylcreem as long as ive been putting gel in my hair, even though since college ive become too lazy to do it:cool:

works well for me, lasts as long as i ever needed it too and you can normally get a 2 pack deal for a 5er in most chemists/supermarkets

    Red dax wax

it's the only thing that can control my paddy fro!

+1 for the dax but it's a divil to get out - washing up liquid is the only thing with the surfactantey goodness to get the job done. I have heard purple dax is easier to get out - i dunno I stopped with all that years ago. Used to hate crispy hair syndrome though.

American Crew is good stuff, Recently been using Moosehead - can be found in Tesco & Boots I think - it's the red covered tin, it's not gel but clay - find it's good for longish hair and keeping it looking under control

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,512 ✭✭✭BigDuffman

Is it particularly the wet look you're looking for? I've been using wax / putty's recently. Great for the matt effect. Brylcreme wax or Phish Food putty.

+1 for American Crew. One of the lads turned me onto it a few years ago and haven't looked back since. Pretty broad range of products too so should be able to find one that suits you.

I find Fish products the best, once I started using them I couldn't believe I had used Dax for so long. Seriously Dax is fecking awful stuff.

Fish is the best stuff that you will buy in a shop. They have a wide range of stuff. Barbers do stuff too most of that stuff is good but way way over priced. American crew is decent but think Fish is better.

If you're looking for good spray, I recommend:

    100-degrees-sport-body-spray-fcuk.jpg

The shower gel is also quite nice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,503 ✭✭✭thomasm

Label M Matt Paste. Looks like nothing in your hair but great control. Bit pricey but you only need a pea sized amount so lasts for ages.

This. It's OK when hair dressers say it. I'll let them away with it under the "trade jargon" clause but I think the average joe like me saying it sounds silly.

First they came for the socialists...

I find it great and dosnt grease up your pillow

Taft hair gel is the one i use, Its amazing!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,092 ✭✭✭CiaranMT

I use Brylcreem Ultra Strong gel (the purple one).

I have very thick hair and it's the only one that'll do me when it reaches a certain length.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone else here has recommendations for gels/waxes/putties that are useful for thick hair.

I've used Dax, Fructis, Brylcreem's own waxes and none are all that good. Cleaning wax out is a b1tch too.

If you're living anywhere other than Ennis i can't tell you specifically where you could get it. Usually though you can only buy it either online or in the barbers. Worth noting that not all barbers stock it.

    Wella-Shockwaves.jpg

The little one on the right is the only gel/wax I use for a couple of reasons.

1)Its water based so washes out easily.I always found brylcream, dax, fish paste etc a hoor to get rid of.
    2)Its cheap,like less than 4 quid a pot and lasts 5 to 6 weeks.
3)It doesnt dry out and turn your hair into a cast iron helmet and that means it retains the wet look.
4)It has a really nice smell, not chemically like brylcream.

If anyone of ye is going to try it make sure and check that its hard in the pot,not the gooey crap.

The only down side is that it can be hard to get out of the pot til you get down into it a bit but I find using the lid as a mini scraper works perfectly.

Try it and you wont go back to anything else.

I have short hair which I like to keep spikey too.

If you want a very strong hold, Shockwaves Styling steel is birlliant.

  • Registered Users Posts: 308 ✭✭beefjerky

I've short hair and this keeps it spiked / shaped for the whole day and night, washes out really easy too. When my hair gets longer, it still does the job, i probably get a haircut every 6-8weeks.

    im_1-4.jpg

I was using Dax Blue, but it's so greasy! also I prefer the dry look than the wet look so once i found this, and at the price as well. usually €5.30 in boots, but sometimes on special 2 for €5 (in boots Grafton street anyway).

Nore money but also great is the Grafton barber clay, not sure how much that is though.

Plus one on the VO5 stuff from me, been using this for a few years now having moved to it from Shockwaves wax. Good for the matt effect and holds for hours.

I always use wet look brylcreem.

What I do is wet my hair, then I put a squirt in my hand, rub it between by fingers and rub it into my head. Then I get a comb and slick my hair back from the forehead.

You can't beat the Lecter look!

I used Brylcreem and Dax as a teenager but haven't touched them in years. I find Aveda Control Paste and Redken Rough Paste quite good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,137 ✭✭✭Balfie

    I use This 7240112.77114dfbc1c63f7913.02402806

Best gel by a long mile..

    I love using it..

I have this weird thing tho that I love picking the gel out of my hair when the gel drys...

Use OSMO range. Get it from my hairdresser.

I have thick hair and have it kind of to the side atm. Lasts the day too. There are stronger versions of it and works really well.

Its 10 bucks a tub though and lasts a month.

Spray, any nivea anti-persperant is quality!

This stuff is amazing, costs about 4 quid in tesco. I bought it in september, using it pretty much everyday since then and I would say Ive used about a quarter of it in that time. It works best when your hair is shortish butstill holds well when you start getting a bit shaggy. I've not gotten a haircut in about 2 months now and still does the trick. Wshes out easy and holds all day also able to restyle without adding any more in

I've found this to be the best imo. Doesn't turn rock solid, is easy to wash out the next day and smells pretty good.

I use the Vo5 putty in plastic container. Then spray with Vo5 gel spray. Mix it up with fingers to give messy look then a 7second hair dry . Holds for days on end if it gets very dry just sprinkle water on it rub it through or a light spray of the gel.

For super hard spikes I go with Vo5 extra strong gel.

Not a spray, but I'm wondering if anybody knows of places that stock Old Spice roll-on deodorants? Bought it in Canada and it lasted over a year, did the job and would like to get some again w/out paying over the odds for p+p from Amazon.

I vaguely remember seeing some roll-on Old Spice some time back, but I can't for the life of me remember where. If it comes back to me I'll let you know.

That stuff is awesome for the summer when my hairs shorter, really holds well Unlike most other brands I got fine hair so it suits me most of the time...

That stuff, while it has good hold,is like trying to get axle grease out of your hair, its horrendous.

TBH I don't remember if I've used that exact one I linked to as there are so many options, but I haven't had that problem with any of the fish products I have used.

Shockwaves etc are rubbish, 2000 called and it wants its wet look gel back.

The vo5 putty / gum stuff is decent.

I use this powdered stuff, it looks like talc powder you just pour it all over your hair. Hair doesn't clump together and its probably the strongest hair product I've ever used.

Sometimes whack a bit of hairspray over the top just to be sure, usually when going out only mind.

If you want your hair to stick up the quickest way is to straighten it up. ;)

Definitely Hairspray is perfect to hold your hair once styled.
I use the tesco own brand which is extremely strong holding.
However, hairspray will not work with the more waxy products because it will not bond properly with them.

I am currently using the, Shockwaves GO Matt Clay after trying numerous products. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wella-Shockwaves-Matt-Clay-Pack/dp/B004PGIB6A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1326524967&sr=8-1

I tend to use the clay to style my hair. Let it dry in then use the hairspray to hold the style.

    Works perfectly!

Okay, I have just used the best hair cream/gel/wax ever.

    gatsby-styling-wax-ultra-hard-.jpg

I'm growing my hair so needed something with very strong hold, the Fish stuff I use at present is a very hard wax which takes way too much time to apply, but this stuff from Japan is so much better and it takes a surprisingly small amount to be really effective. Plus it's like a hard cream which is very quick and easy to apply and very easy to wash off from your hands.

I bought from this eBay shop for $4 + $4 P&P. I shall definitely be placing a bulk order.

Gatsby have other products too for different lengths/styles of hair so check 'em out.

If you can afford it: Tigi Bead Head Manipulator... great hold, non-greasy, no stickiness or hardness, washes out easily.

    http://www.tigihaircare.com/consumer/en-UK/bedhead/bedhead-products.asp?product=manipulator&categoryID=7

Ain't half expensive though! Anybody know of any product with similar results, but easy on the pocket??
