The Irish Open Golf is going to be held in The United Kingdom. Another example of the mess Irish golf is in...Every single ticket, all the food and drink will be sold in Sterling and going to the UK revenue pockets.

    WHAT A SHOCKING DECISION.
Killarney was the obvious choice, record numbers last year....MADNESS,
For a man trying to promote his own version of the world cup of golf, it must be said you're doing a wonderful job, keep up the good work!.

WTF, last i heard it was being held at Carton House. How can they hold the Irish open in the UK
Golf is non political,(so in golfing terms there is no UK or GB), lets try and keep it that way and not make ourselves look like total bogger bigots.

Delighted the Irish Open is going to Portrush. I have been travelling up there with my group of golfers from the West playing Castlerock,Portstewart and The Valley for the last 29 years. The craic will be mighty in the The Anchor Bar in Portstewart and The Harbour Bar in Portrush come the of June. Warm and friendly folk up there and great golf fan's.

Golf in Ireland is, and always has been, a 32 county union. The Irish Open is not the "Republic of Ireland" Open. The Irish Open in 2012 is being held in Ireland (the 32 county golfing union) Presumably the people expressing their disgust that the Irish Open is being held in NI apply the same logic when it comes to their attitude towards the NI golfers, including major winners Rory, GMac and DC!? Should Rory and GMac therefore not be allowed to play for Ireland in the World Cup?
Personally I am glad that the tournament is being held on one of Ireland’s great links courses. We have some of the world’s finest on this island and I think it’s a shame when we chose to ignore these courses in favour of the modern parkland style seen on the tour every week. It adds a bit of variety to the European Tour calendar. If a strategy to play on a links every year in close proximity to the Open Championship I’m sure that we would see the tournament appealing to more and more big stars wishing to get a bit of prep for the Open.
Also – the 3rd major of the year is called the Open Championship not the British Open

Couldnt agree more. Why the Irish Open hasnt always been used as a tool to highlight our links courses is a mystery.
I hardly think your average foreign golf tourist sits at home dreaming of coming to ireland to play in a flat field that 10 years ago held 100 milch cows!
its the links that get people excited and spending the dosh.

Wow this thread has gone silly

People happy to celebrate Clarkes, Gmacs or McElroys major wins as Irish wins but if the Irish Open goes to Portrush its leaving Ireland????

Shame its not closer to me as I would to have like to have gone but looking forward to watching it . Hopefully it attracts a good field.

For any golfers that still want to make their annual trip to Killarney for 4 days of great golf in June on The Killarney killeen course (Irish Open course 2010-11) Waterville, Dooks and Mahonys Point we still have The 2012 Amateur Team World Cup of Golf (www.worldcupofgolf.com) which is Open to all golfers with NO NEED to qualify.

And then up to Portrush a few weeks later for the Irish Open.
    Happy days

Correct. Ireland has 25% of the World's links courses, assets that should be sold to the golfing world.

Main news on BBC website. Didnt see that when it was on in Killarney

    BBC...
US Open champion McIlroy has already guaranteed his participation at Royal Portrush and spoke of his delight at the return to event to Northern Ireland for the first time since it was staged at Belvoir Park in 1953.
"I'm delighted that I was able to work on my schedule that I can play in the Irish Open," said McIlroy.

Can McIlroy honeslty say he didnt know it wasnt going to Portrush before he announched he would be playing in the Irish Open ;)

Can only improve the field having it on a links course 3 weeks before "The Open". With the Scottish open also on links and French Open at Le Golf National it's a great 4 weeks golf on the European tour.

You're right. There has been a lot of manoeuvring behind the scenes for this one!

This might explain gmac's lack of enthusiasm for killarney last year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 396 ✭✭Opics

Are the people complaining about it going North of the border the same people that were appalled at the idea of McIlroy considering skipping the Irish Open this year? :pac:

Hard to believe its almost 60 years since it was last held up north, although about 20 of those years didnt have an Irish Open afaik.

Carton House given the 2013 Open.

When are tickets likely to go on sale for portrush and how would you go about getting them?

Have always got them at the gate without any problem and never any booking fees etc.

Edit ; Just noticed on the website that prebooked day tickets £10 cheaper than the gate price:eek:

The gate price has always been a rip off. I believe I once got a season ticket online and attended all 4 days for cheaper than buying a 1 day ticket at the entrance.

Stayed in the anchor bar in portsteward a few times, great place to stay lovely rooms earplugs are left in the room for you and believe me you will need them. Might be worth checking out for those of you looking for somewhere to stay.

I'm really glad to see the insane reaction talk starting to idle here and the slight murmur of excitement take hold. It's going to be epic in Portrush.

Whats the chances of Tiger making it over, 3 weeks before the open! with the scottish open in between! (another links course).

What with him and darren being big mates, and all! :)

Hmm ud imagine that there will be some very big names at this event to get some links practice in before the british open, ive a feeling thats partly why they chose portrush and not killarney or carton

Don't want to burst anyone's bubble, but the AT&T Invitational is on that weekend in Washington.

Tiger is one of the patrons of that tournament so he'll be across the pond.

With a prize fund of $6m, so will most of the rest of the world's top 50. I'd be genuinely shocked if even any of Donald, Westwood, Poulter or Casey turn up in Portrush.

Super news, couldn't play an Irish Open on a better course imo.
Good that they also announced a venue for next years Irish Open also so we won't be arsing around this time next year wondering where will it be played.

While it's good to see such a Golf Course get such an event, I hope it is fully funded by the authorities in that region. This is one event Bórd Fáilte should have no part in supporting.

It'll presumably be supported by NITB and Tourism Ireland.

Chairman of Failte Ireland was at the launch yesterday so yeah I presume its a joint venture with the North board.

I don't imagine Failte Ireland will be playing an actual role, however, surely it's Tourism Ireland, the cross-border body that will promote it globally, in collaboration with NITB?

What is the registration fee to play in this competition if the team don't need the accom., the hire-car, etc. etc?

€399 per golfer but that includes the Gala dinner also.
Thats for the Registration, entry to the event and the four competition rounds of golf. If without the Gala dinner its €359 (But if you win the event or a prize you will have to stand at the back of the room lol) Live European championships matches every night on Big screen.

Tickets available on the European Tour Website. Bought a day ticket last night for £26 which I thought was pretty good value. Access for any of the days. Will probably go on the Thursday to avoid the larger crowds.

You'll get a few up there for sure I would think...we've already booked apartment a couple of miles away..should be great week

There might not be too many americans playing the Irish Open. The AT&T at Congressional is being held that same weekend, which is a big enough tournament on the PGA tour.
