Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

That dash cam was in great spot to catch that moped getting binned...

Anyone watched that cop car workshop on Dave? It’s daytime telly and gimmicky but interesting all the same...they seem to lose a lot of squad cars to ‘tactical collisions’ by the looks of it they were repairing or writing of a car every few days...

Would gardai be trained on similar manoeuvres or is it something that’s not encouraged? Or do we just not hear about it when it doesn’t happen

Here, I would think purposefully instigating a collision with a motorcycle would generally be seen as excessive and disproportionate.

    Depends on what they've done.

Run a few red lights - yes
Street robbery or a smash and grab - no

Moped crime in London had become pandemic because the gougers knew the police wouldn't chase/ram bikes. Now they will, that type of crime has significantly reduced

Not really as it is tactical contact, which is widely implemented across most European states but not Ireland.
There is a video of Norwegian police chasing a moped and trying to do the same contact.
PA and GSOC would have a field day if a gard did such action, that as well as the Facebook comment contributors “my little angle wouldn’t hurt a fly”.

I digress, the contact is proportional and the danger of the public is taken into account when the call is given to block. The moped gangs in London use the pathways and on coming traffic as bid to get away. It is rampant in London so I believe that why they have such calls.

I think the public would rather a tax payers patrol car get damaged than themselves or there property get damaged.

My point was that you don’t see that here and such action would be seen as excessive but in the most exceptional of circumstances.
I would see that as a positive reflection of Irish society and indeed the effectiveness of our policing service in avoiding the need for such force and the high level of associated risk.

Well I was referring to this country. It wouldn’t typically be seen as a reasonable use of force in response to a street robbery.

London and other UK cities are big into moped and motorcycle.

In Ireland it's very low, so low that bikes are rarely used.

I can remember back in 2000/01 bikes were much more visible.

I can't remember the last time I saw a 50cc moped on our roads. In the late 90's the place was awash with Yamaha Aerox, Peugeot Speedfight etc, I think insurance and legislation around licencing killed them off which is a shame as they were pretty much one step up from a fast pushbike in terms of complexity to get up and running.

Ok, it seems like a statement against a manoeuvre, I believe another commentator picked up on it that way also, maybe worded slightly different or the way you stated above. It would be a progressive move on ags part if it was back from the top down but unfortunately it isn’t.

Very true, it’s more of a continental mode of transport now. A friend of mine was in Barcelona for work and the bike units are driving the new BMW C evolutions...they a very quick and travel in twos normally.

Back when I first got a digital camera, I kept it in the car and took photos of anything remotely interesting, so happen to have some photographic evidence of said issues.

Remember an auld buck telling me once that when they took a corner too hard one night, light came flying off and straight through the window of a parked car. Light got ripped straight out of the socket.

Not sure if they ever went back to retrieve it

BMWs are really becoming a thing over there now. Seen a few G30 530ds myself when they were introduced. Victoria Highway Patrol are also using X5s. The days of the traditional Falcons and Commodores are limited.

You could say that the Aussie polices forces have more variety then here and possibly the UK from what I've seen. I've even seen an i40 once

The days of Falcons and Commodores are gone. They've stopped making them. In fact, Holden as a company ceased at midnight on 31/12/20.

That's why aussie police moved. They'd no choice

I never realised they pulled out altogether, actually quite shocked to hear that. Guessing the growing popularity for VAG and Koren stuff was probably their demise. You'd never really see older European cars over there tbh.

Ford pulled out a few years ago, 2016/17 iirc and Holden changed from a V8 rwd saloon to a rebadged Opel insignia for the Commodore.

That was never going to fit the bill compared to what they were used to.

Police in New Zealand were faced with the same problem. They recently announced they were going with the Skoda Superb

Big difference on when partol cars are scrapped over there and here.
" Patrol cars are considered for replacement at an age of six or seven years, or once they reach 120,000km."

Is the lack of higher spec/performance cars made available by dealers here a problem for AGS in procuring their fleet? Or is it purely down to cost?

Cost and driver qualifications with cbd3 as hasn’t being a course in years / ever!

The 5 or 6 marked 530Ds took over 4 years to be attached to units

When needed they go to UK. The ASU XC70's were special order. More 'recently' the Insignia's were again brought in from UK.

I remember chatting to some lads in an ANPR car and they were telling me the ANPR system was bought second hand from the PSNI.

No, afaik it came down to the disco and the land cruiser but there was a supply issue with the Toyota at the time.

Someone tried to give them a 2.0 Tuscon initially

Any garda vehicle could end up being the one that has to keep in contact with criminals who are trying to evade capture. It isn't always RSU or Road Policing.
I'll bow to others in terms of the internal size , and yeah as uniform and kit gets bulkier ( and hopefully more effective/protective) then the vehicle is going to have to follow ... I've never been in a kona but it looks a lot bigger than an old fiesta ..
Is a kona any slower than an i30 ?

Land Rover is British army spec, and Granada is the 2.0 engined one doing the rounds at shows. The lights on the roof light bar should be the 'crumpet' ones, not the tall Hellas and the reg plate has clip on letters rather than the usual pressed ones...Movie set:cool:

I seen a few white Tuscons around Cork City in the last few days not fully marked up, just with Garda on them and they have unmarked type blues.
