If Gay Byrne is blaming members for increase of road deaths or other such issues - hes an even bigger muppet then I thought.

Hed be better off making sure hes doing his own job right - I reckon hes achieved very little in the rule as RSA chairman quite frankly.

Gay Byrne is probably a frustrated man now, people in their twenties who probably statistically have most accidents, have no idea who he is.
Time for a new face there I think, someone that these young drivers recognize and respect.

Byrne's comments are being misreported. He laid the blame firmly at the door of garda management, for not putting enough resources on the road.

Also - why would traffic corps be under fire for the increasing road deaths - cutbacks and general poor approach by officialdom to road safety is to blame there I think.

Traffic corps can only deal with what they can see going on in front of them - they cant deal with some nutcase pulling off a dangerous overtake - a mile behind or ahead of the traffic corps car.

Think one thing that could be done in the line of traffic corps in that regard - is to have decent unmarked cars - preferably stuff that wouldn't normally be associated with Garda cars (Audis etc).

If you enter Audi A6 Avant unmarked police cars or something like that in google - and go into images - youd see some nice unmarked Audis.

Seen a pic of a lovely silver A4 Avant (2010/11 type model) unmarked - it had the lights lit up in the pics but youd never know it was unmarked with lights off.

I only mention Audi as an example - but having unmarked cars could be good - drivers wouldn't know that the car behind them or in front was a Garda car until they are pulled in for driving like a muppet.

Just my two cents as an outsider (apologies)

Is Traffic's Volvo repaired yet after the Dame St incident, that's as unmarked as you can get? Even see new and old Mondeos with very little evidence on the outside and of course the Skoda Superbs / Land Cruisers / Audis BMW's .... There's a lot of stuff available depending on what the powers that be approve - internal politics/requirments :(

Aside from the 'Speed kills' mantra, I'm sure the Collision Investigation boys would have views on what ACTUALLY caused the accident. Sometimes it can be road surface problems / road markings / signage / people texting /using computer etc etc..... Yes, the majority were probably speeding without a seat belt but we need to move on from just 'Speed kills' and outline exactly what other elements can get you killed.

As for Gaybo - he nearly crashed into me one day so ... Yesterday's man :p

There's the triple holder in the windshield that looks the same from 100m, some even have 'insurance' and 'NCT certs' in them - tho' what reg. no's. are on them is anybody's guess

I think a lot of people are not getting the correct message when they hear 'speed kills'. I think people think of excessive speed as being over the speed limit which is not entirely true. Excessive speed can be below the posted speed limit but excessive for the road/weather conditions, traffic congestion (be it vehicles or pedestrians etc) and other specific conditions. Hell you can travel around a 45 degree bend well below the speed limit but too fast to take the bend and still kill yourself or someone else.

Gardaí foiled an elaborate plan by gunmen to “spring” a violent Limerick criminal from a courthouse in a daring raid, it emerged last night.
The plot involved gunmen using motorbikes carrying out an ambush on prison officers at Limerick Circuit Court. Gardaí received information of the plan and a huge security operation was put in place for the court hearing where the criminal was due to be remanded. More than 20 armed detectives, along with members of the Garda Armed Support Unit, took up positions in and around the courthouse when the criminal was brought to court on the day of the planned escape..

    More here... http://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/limerick-gardai-foil-daring-raid-by-gunmen-to-spring-criminal-from-court-253001.html

Short video of the prisoner escort here... http://www.limerickpost.ie/2013/12/13/video-limerick-tiger-kidnap-sentencing-case-adjourned-amid-heavy-security/

Sorry for slightly going off topic but, would it not have been easier for the court case to be held in the prison, instead of utilising all of these resources on a toe rag?

    Re Cork Traffic Van.

What exactly is it for? Transporting traffic cones?

Or is it more a general purpose van considering it does not have the typical battenburg markings?

Does the rear light bar have red lights at the back of it?

They both look to be identical to the general one that came with the Avensis', so they both have rear reds I'd assume.

Does the van have the evidential breath test machine on board?

I am just wondering as well, now that AGS have replaced a few wagons with small Courier vans is this more of a general purpose van?

Obviously Cork would not have the same selection of vehicles compared with Dublin.

    For commercial vechile stops etc

Cheaper mark it as regular than traffic

    Yes it has rear reds

Would this be one of the vans that were bought to be used as mobile Garda stations just redeployed?

It wouldn't. Legislation does not allow for roadside testing using that machine even though it's designed to be used that way.

Why am I not surprised by that? I would normally use some select words right now, however with due respect to you all just suffice in saying, isn't the law in this country wonderful?
Just considering the man hours, the station personnel etc. To think that they could have set up a checkpoint, double checked someone's readings then into a wagon and off to a holding cell somewhere if necessary.

So the garda have no portable EBTs?

On a night shift a booze buss could process over 10 offenders road side.

You can only put someone on the machine if arrested. Alcometers at roadside to aid opinion or MAT Checkpoint.

The evidenzer can fit in a car. Look on their site and there is a pic of one in a rear central arm rest. Gas presumably in the boot.

Ah, here you don't have to be arrested. Should refuse a lawful request to provide a sample you are charged with refuse.

The penalty for refuse is higher than exceed pca

Is there a particular reason for that? Why the need for a station ? Could a booze bus or testing truck come under the definition of a station in the act?

Well I reckon the reason is straight forward, it is the fact that this is The Republic Of Ireland, where the law is more on the side of the wrong do-er rather than the innocent or those trying to police it.

Yeah, you don't want to be making it easy to prosecute people, lest the crustys start shouting "police state".

Guess it's more to do with the custody regulations and the legislation surrounding that.

I'v seen plenty of 02 unmarked focuses still flying about the place.. I find it strange how a car of that age hasnt reached the milage limit. I mean well over ten years of driving..
