Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Wouldn't be too unnecessarily embarrassed by this, it's not an uncommon sight on the continent and stateside.

Saw the new model Garda BMW X5 on the N7 last night. Great looking car.

Dacia is a cheap Renault is a cheap Nissan! That Duster is marketed in some markets as a 'Nissan Terrano ' ! ! ! Could have been worse, a Lada Niva :(

It's a vehicle to do a job - if it does the job safely and cheaply then grand -
It wouldn't bother me if non pursuit Garda cars were Dacia dusters - and the money saved went to better traffic corp cars and area pursuit cars -
Hell, I think more urban gardai should do routine patrols and calls on bicycles.

I am sure it has been talked about before but a search has revealed nothing.

There is an unmarked Volvo S60 that goes up and down the M50. Seems like its a bit out of the ordinary. Was the Volvo a seizure or part of a bigger purchase plan? I have never seen an S60 anywhere else.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 615 ✭✭✭Boaty

I really don't think it should be talked about either, trying to stay under the radar?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,385 ✭✭✭Preset No.3

Then it's doing a really bad job at staying under the radar with the blues on, uniformed members and the anpr on it!

It was at the scene of an accident on the M50 last night with the directional arrows on the side of the car but yeh it's REALLY staying under the radar!!!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,190 ✭✭✭Mister Jingles

Didn't they use that in traffic blues on rte years a few years back, hardly that much of a secret ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 615 ✭✭✭Boaty

I assumed it was trying to stay undercover due to the make of the car, you usually don't see one off cars in regular/traffic units?

There is a difference between an undercover and an unmarked car.

The chances are you won't spot an undercover car unless you are very switched on.

It's a good idea to have loads of different unmarked traffic cars- sure if you just had unmarked mondeo everyone would just behave when overtaking a mondeo -
I've seen unmarked subarus - BMW - insignia - Hyundai and of course the mondeo - no bad thing to move them round -

First visit to Ireland by an Indian premier since 1982, and bear in mind India has its fair share of domestic conflict as well as being in a state of aggression with Pakistan, I reckon its a prudent precaution to make.

I'd rather have it and not need it rather than the other way around.

I agree about the use of the ambulance, I just hope the HSE invoice the Dept Of Justice for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,257 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Maybe I'm being a bit "people's champion " here but I think there's no need to take a public service ambulance and crew off 999 duty for some foreign dignitaries when there are any amount of private ambulance services or even an army ambulance, who could step in there.
You say you would rather have it there and not need it, well that could mean someone having a heart attack and that ambulance is not where it's needed the most.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,555 ✭✭✭kub

I like to think that it is a spare ambulance with a crew on overtime.

True, although only 5 were loaned by BMW Ireland, 4 BMW X5s and 1 BMW 760i High Security, a lefthand drive copy of Prince Charles' vehicle. Only two of the X5s loaned were in Prince Charles' motorcade, the other two accompanied Camilla twice when she left for separate engagements to her husband.

    The Special Detective Unit/Emergency Response Unit uses the following unmarked cars;
    -2012 Toyota Land Cruiser 4.5L V8 Diesel
    -2008 BMW 5 Series
    -2008 Audi Q7 3.0L Disesel (240bhp)
-2010 Land Cruiser Ranger Rover 3.0L Diesel V6
    -2006 Volvo S80 Premium 2.4L Diesel

They have plenty more unmarked cars

Fair enough, never seen one before doubt its still in service though because once they go over 200,000 km's they are gone and that would be rsu driving that

Still in service as this considered different to normal patrol vehicles that are grounded 300,000 km or 180,000 miles

    Bikes are at 200,000

Jeeps & vans are 500,000 included police spec xc70

FAO Odean, again as Pogan said welcome to the forum, i noticed over in the vehicle gallery thread that you stated that you doubted that the 05 BMW RSU 4 x 4 that is in service in Anglesea St.

Well it actually is, i saw it myself exiting off the N40 at the Wilton Exit on Friday.

PS RSU is short for Regional Support Unit, so it is immaterial as to which Cork district it is in, or for that matter any.

An armoured x5 with massive milage and if necessary a new engine-gearbox-suspension and brakes wouldn't be all that bad -

The reason I doubted it was that it apparantly is an armoured one which are not used by RSU at all only special branch have hardshell cars, I know what RSU means haha

100% it's bulletresitant in cork, doors in it weight a fair bit.

There was a tender for vans when them fiat vans came on they meant to be mobile offices didn't work so traffic and some regulars got them.

They don't need to tender for certain cars if it's below certain amount e.g for specialist units

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,555 ✭✭✭kub

And of course the custom built Traffic Opels.
They are not Ford's or Hyundai's either.

  • Registered Users Posts: 52 ✭✭ODEON123

The armoured range rover that the guards bought in I think 2007/8 might be wrong on year but I thon it was a waste because they get them for free from range rover when they need them plus with the money they spent on the range rover they probably could of bought 2-3 armoured bmw's or similar high end cars

I can state with absolute certainty that the gun lockers are still in place in the boot of the volvos.

Let's not forget that these cars were purchased direct from Volvo as police vehicles. The only retrofitting that happened here was the installation of comms equipment. These cars were built to take the weight and abuse they would encounter in their role.

No retrofitting, they came ready to go.

And I've never heard even the faintest rumour about the safe and chassis issue. I'm calling bull****. If you have evidence to the contrary Odeon then take a picture and post it.

I wasn't suggesting there was retrofitting, just saying that garda radios were put in then when they arrived.

I remember a heap of them around the square in the college when they first arrived. Awesome sight.

You can but we didn't have tetra outside a couple of districts in Dublin back in 08 tetra didn't go live till 2009. RSU were definitely live when I started in my station in 08.

My best pic from 2008 in the other thread.

So in 7 years only 5 had to be replaced not bad considering what they are used for.

One of them were also in a very bad crash a while goin cork. Head on collision with a garda transit wasnt it...

I was never a fan of those Bmw x5's myself. Very suitable for the role though and nice ground clearance on them. I'd say height would be a great advantage at times..

I also wondered why they never used mitsubishi pajeros.
