On topic, does anyone know if the announced single player DLC is story based or just challenges?

    BWAHAHAHAAHAHAHA

On topic, they said they have MP DLC but have one Single Player DLC as they have 'more story to tell'

  • Registered Users Posts: 29,106 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Ah crap. Multiplayer DLC and challenge mode DLC doesn't really interest me too much. But if story based DLC, I may be interested.

If they hold off the ending as DLC I'll go bananas!

    Then buy it anyway.

Uncharted's multiplayer was quite good. I'm ready to try it at least :)

Didn't want to quote the whole thing, but no, thanks for the post. You argued your case very well. It shows why the argument should be taken seriously and was a lot more than a throw away line that we've all heard before about gaming too many times, I think. If there are people who are jaded, it is because it harks of the are games art discussion, and how lots of people seem to need validation that hey games are as much an art form as film.

    You are a walking contradiction.

So you admit Goldeneye is a good game? Still? Despite the fact its graphic have aged?
If you think GoldenEye has only been surpassed visually, then sure, but that isn't the reality. GoldenEye was a defining game in console shooters, but it has been surpassed in every way.

Yeah Uncharted 3 MP was a laugh, very generic and mindless but grand to waste a few hours. This looks to have more depth but I'd love to play as the infected ala Left 4 Dead.

Oh no you said 'in the main'! All my arguments are now null and void! Then you doubled down!

Yeah, the point was to specifically ensure that there are some games which hold up. I said in the main, you ignored it and jumped in anyway with an exception to the rule.
    Retr0gamer wrote: »
I totally disagree with you that 30 year old games are somehow less relevant or accessible than newer games. If you play an old game and it's not as good as you remember it's because it wasn't very good to begin with.

Well, that's absolute rubbish to me.

There are umpteen games from the PS1 era which would all be highly rated on a critical basis but would now be a chore to play - leaving aside graphics for the moment. That does not mean they weren't great games.

I'd argue MSG1 was an outstanding game for its time and people playing it for the first time would undoubtedly get something from it but non-graphical issues such as controls impact severely on the enjoyment of it these days (imo of course.)

    Retr0gamer wrote: »
There's no 'in the main' games age worse than film. Maybe graphically they do in 2600 games or 32 bit polygons but then dismissing a game for it's graphics is like dismissing a film for not being in colour. If it's good it will stand the test of time.

Again, I completely disagree and I never said anything about graphics being the only reason. Leaving aside graphics, control systems in games have evolved over time, UIs have improved for the most part, the standard of story telling also better in my opinion (you will probably pick out a couple of examples of excellently told video game stories from past generations but I would still argue the % of decently told stories in this and the last gen had been higher then the % of previous eras).

I think you missed the point somewhat but yes Goldeneye has been surpassed - thanks for pointing out the painfully obvious!

I have to agree with this. Especially since you picked MGS, a game I adored when I had a PS1. Playing it on the PS3 is a chore.

This has become a ridiculous circuitous debate though, as everyone can pull arguments from any number of sources to support their side or pull down the other. Until we've all played it, had time to consider it, there's no way of resolving the debate because we just don't know. Which has been my point all along.

I appreciate the in-depth responses you've given, and agree with several of your points (I'd respond more but lunchtime is almost over!). I just want to restress that my main issue with the whole 'Citizen Kane of gaming' thing is that its representative of a strain of lazy, metacritic-driven games journalism, much the same way many film reviewers often fall back on 'it's like a video game' comments while failing to show a fundamental lack of understanding of the criticism they think they're making. The Citizen Kane comparison has been so overused at this point that I can't help but groan everytime I read it. And in the context of quoted review itself - which is, after all, the only thing we can go on, alongside the other existing reviews - I don't feel it was anything other than lazy shorthand. It's a phrase whose retirement on a general scale cannot come soon enough IMO!

I do wish reviewers would be less hyperbolic in their writing, and be more willing to save such statements once sufficient time and consideration has passed (just look at film festival or preview reviews to see how immediate responses can be completely distorted by hype and excitement - and in gaming 'preview' reviews are often considerably ethically shadier than that). Like Kane was far, far from the first film to be taken seriously by critics and academics, there's no doubt we already have several of our timeless games - titles from Mario to Minecraft have pushed the medium and language of gaming forward in exhilarating and formative ways. More than anything, both gamers and critics probably just need to develop more articulate ways to respond to great games.

You playstation nerds and your 10/10 review. Oh wow. Gears of War got 11/10 and so did Halo. That statue is too expensive so I'm giving this game a 7/10. Gears of War is way better.

I have no interest in this game whatsoever. There is a game on my phone called Angry Birds and that's brilliant because one of the birds is dressed like Luke Skywalker.

I for one will not be going home at 2pm tomorrow to collect my preorder for TLoU and playing it straight till 7pm. That's for dorks. I'll be prepping my home entertainment room for the XBox1. Who needs couches!

    Later losers!

Any pricing doing the rounds for this in Argos?

    Nothing online as of yet....

    That was me actually :)
    NotorietyH wrote: »
I'm well aware of the history of Citizen Kane. It was also nominated for 9 Oscars, so exactly shunned as people like to say.

Well yes but it still lost Best Picture to "How Green Was My Valley" and who the hell is still talking about that one (presumable some but not many people)? The nomination shows that they thought it was a good movie, but they had no idea how big it would be. This is why I think the whole Citizen Kane thing is rubbish. They could be totally right about it and TLOU has just as much chance as any other game of being the one we still look back on in 50 years and say "there was the game that changed all games after it" but at the same time, TLOU has just as much chance as any other game if you get me.

I've been childishly excited about it for 2 days over a year now (yeah, I went and found that out ) so hopefully it is that important but my main point is that making any statement about how influential a game will be is just shooting in the dark. Maybe Aliens: Colonial Marines will end up being the important one and this will fade into obscurity :p
    NotorietyH wrote: »
The certainty with which people who haven't played the game, say that it couldn't possible be a watershed moment...

I'm not sure anyone was saying that necessarily, more that the amount of uncertainty made the original statement unjustified, even if it is technically true. It's just that if you say that it "could be" in your review, it sort of implies that you think this one above all others will probably be the big one, which is something nobody can really predict with any accuracy at all.

Several of the action scenes in the Hobbit are like a really, really bad game. If The Last of Us resists the temptation to have its two protagonists surf a collapsing bridge or do a 1080 degree spin around a gangway, we're on the right track.
