Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Going back to second level school next September.....but I have no mates anymore (only something I feel comfortable admitting in this faceless world) and the loneliness combined with too much spare time is killing me. I just need something to do to fill the time of day for the next 8 or so months.

All I have is my Junior Cert. Every FAS training course application gets rejected.

Any thoughts or ideas please? :-(

Voluntary work? Just 'cos you don't have quals doesn't mean you're not able for lots of things. Is there a volunteer centre in your town?

    Hi Godot,

From the boredom perspective perhaps you could have a think of what you would like to do once the leaving cert is over from a career perspective (University or straight into a job). Their are a large volume of free online courses that you can take such as the following. Some of the following would be complex but as it's free and your not really committed to fully completing them their is no pressure so it would not feel as bad.

    http://www.saas-class.org/
    http://www.launchpad-class.org/
    http://www.anatomy-class.org/
    http://www.greenbuilding-class.org/
    http://www.infotheory-class.org/
    http://www.modelthinker-class.org/
    http://www.cs101-class.org/
    http://jan2012.ml-class.org/
    http://www.saas-class.org/
    http://www.hci-class.org/
    http://www.nlp-class.org/
    http://www.game-theory-class.org/
    http://www.pgm-class.org/
    http://www.crypto-class.org/
    http://www.algo-class.org/
    http://www.security-class.org/

Loneliness is a more complex beast. But my answer would be to find people in a similar situation to yourself and try and hang out with them. Plenty of unemployed people out there so must be other people feeling your pain!

    Keep the spirit up! :)

I'm 19 and live in rural West Clare. Any links to specific things one can do? My only worry is the petrol money travelling to somewhere like Ennis every day would be awful.

Thanks for the reply, cronos. The thing is I want to get out and meet and talk to people. I probably will end up trying out of of those online courses if I find nothing else to do though.

Don't do an online course like one of those! Sounds boring and I can't see how you'd hold any interest.

Try getting involved with a club, either football or martial arts. You could also sign up for a Fas course, maybe an evening course.. just pay for it yourself if they don't offer to cover the cost.

something else you could do is get up and get a job, anywhere, wear a smile on your face and a bit of character and explore your area with a bunch of c.v's. I left school at 15 always worked my way up to middle management. experience sometimes is better than an education.

I did well in my Junior Cert, but what kind of job of job could I get?

I think I would be good at answering phones, typing out letters on a computer, working behind a till in a shop or stocking shelves....stuff like that, but I'm not sure where to look or how plentiful them kind of jobs are.

Godot, have you been applying for job? Do you have a CV? If not, get someone (FAS if there's no one else!) to help you make one.

Do you have any friends of the family who may be able to help you get a job, or let you volunteer in their workplace? Do you play sport - is there anyone in your club who could help you find something to do?

FWIW, I think going back to school IS a good idea. Sure there are some folks who succeed without it, but most don't: they simply spend their lives in menial jobs.

This is definitely the best way to get the type of job you mentioned. Make sure your CV is attention-grabbing and not just a list of junior cert subjects.

If you don't have work experience emphasise your core skills instead: what are you good at, when have you proven it. Whether it's helping your parents renovate the house or being part of the school band, detail your achievements and show whoever's reading that you're intelligent and interesting (no spelling mistakes!)

You might have to give out 50 CVs before getting an interview, but if you stick at it and try every single place you can find, you'll get lucky sooner or later :)

    Good luck with it!
