I presume it's a question. The best thing for the poster would be to get in contact with the welfare office in Tipp town.

There is as far as I know (or so my wife says..) that you can get a one off payment for an exceptional need or unexpected hard ship?? I think its one of those things that theres no actual form for but done on a discretionary basis. So I'm told anyhows :)

Are you sure that is not one of those myth's? I was listening to the radio one day,and they were saying people on welfare could get money toward's dog food.It turned out to be tripe, the claim that is,not the dog grub!

You can also get money for a bouncy castle if your child is making their first holy communion, cos it's an exceptional need like

The oft-repeated claim that social welfare pay for haircuts, children's prams, and various household needs does actually come from somewhere.

I used to work with a TD during Summer holidays, and we would frequently advise very needy constituents to approach their local Community Welfare Officer, who might be in a position to make an exceptional needs payment. Ireland being Ireland, the TD in question would also have a word with the welfare office on his constituent's behalf.

This facility has probably had a lot of its funding cut, and I daresay that any extension of funds to claimants is now much tougher to ascertain than it was during the boom years (I don't know of any case where our constituency office made a representation for a constituent and the application was denied).

However, none of these claims were for frivolous things. They were for items like washing machines, ESB bills and rent deposits, which would have left the claimant in a genuinely difficult situation if not given assistance.

    heard that too:rolleyes:

who the hell starts these lies/myths

like the one a few years back about Black people getting socialising money utter rubbish

    LOL!!

It's true, not directly for a bouncy castle but there is an ENP for parents who's child is making their communion - I've heard it can be up to €300 so if you get a dress in Debenhams sale the year before you'll have plenty of change leftover for the bouncy castle to keep the kids entertained and loads of booze for the adults

There is no list of permissible claims vs non-permissible claims for ENP. Each claim is assessed on its merits.

Perhaps a few years back when CWOs had more money and no queues, they were able to assist those on the lowest rung of the ladder with these kinds of expenses, but it simply isn't credible that in 2012 they would continue to shell out for new dresses at €300 a pop.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were still shelling out for Communion dresses later10,I mean they're still paying out for washing machines, fridges, cookers, tumble dryers and the like.

That may well be tippspur, but I don't think that's really objectionable in situations where a household has little other choice but to seek help from a CWO for a replacement washing machine.

If you want to see where social welfare are wasting public money, I wouldn't start with the CWO. I'd start with the family who pour their child benefit into Trixie's junior saver account so she can see the world when she's 18. I've worked in banks and I'm sad to say I've seen it happen.

The people who line up to see effectively beg for money from their community welfare officer are not doing it for fun. They are probably amongst the most needy of the country's welfare recipients, not of all of whom are unemployed.
