Also, does anyone not find it slightly ironic that its all the lefty socialist TDs that are opposing this????

I think I can explain, when they were talking about taxing assets, they meant other people's. ;)

I think when push comes to shove and the prospect of fines and court appearances start appearing on the horizon 90% of the people saying they won't pay will cough it up. Although it will be interesting to see what exactly happens to the TDs who have said they won't pay. Would they be prepared to go to jail over it and lose their seats in the Dail? Tbh if that was the stance of my TD I would be calling down to his office and telling him to cop the f*ck on.

I will be paying this and the water charge and yes it is going to increase in years to come but this country needs to widen its tax base so all of it doesn't come from sources directly linked to economic performance such as VAT and stamp duty. That is partly why we are having to endure so much austerity to balance our budget.

+1 to this but il be fighting the septic tank charge if it comes into effect. If they want the tank upgraded they can give a 95% grant for it. Isn't one of the TD's opposed to it mike wallace? A failed developer who has a seat in the dial, owes millions, which we are paying now and he has the nerve to say its ok the rest of you can pay my fines and penalties . Grab the fcuker by the hair and swing him round till he's bald.

If we have to toe the line when it comes to taxes then politicians should be made to cut there salaries to an acceptable level that comes into perspective of the times we live in, the size of the country AND the number of days they are actually in the Dail. They could also stop giving huge pay outs to senior staff heading off to enjoy early retirment by ten years with there massive full pension. There tax breaks should be abolished and services like the pub and laundry etc should be done away with.

I have to laugh at all the 'go to jail for non payment' talk :D

I haven't read any news articles about a single politician/banker who caused this mess doing a bit of time.

I'll go to jail for non payment, when a few of these crooks are rounded up and are threw in the slammer too.

I'll be jailed for non payment of €100, yet they robbed/mismanaged BILLIONS.

    Yeah right, that'll work.

We aren't bailing Mick Wallace out yet, Nothing he owns is in Nama as far as I am aware, as for the poster who reckons TD will loose their seat if they go to jail I dont think that is the case, Kieran Doherty was elected to the Dail while in prison on Hunger strike, also Liam Lawlor I am open to correction on either of these points.

The lack of any kind of basic economic understanding displayed in this thread is at times both hilarious and depressing.

    Our money?

We haven't even enough to fund our own services never mind pay back bondholders - do a bit of research and educate yourself rather than spouting the nonsense slogans that the loony left have fed you.

Well then, why dont you educate us, and tell us exactly where the money to pay them is coming from?

Yes of course it is, the owner has a house worth 200k (example), and the original morgage was 300k, so cant you see this is a wealth tax? No, me either.

Thats some asset alright. This owner would be far worse of than his mate that still lives with parents and made no efforts to save and buy a house.

And is the house worth 200k? They are only worth what they sell for, and not many are selling.

So some of the pro property tax people claim its a wealth tax, others that its a tax for services. Id say its a tax to support the golden circle.

]I think when push comes to shove and the prospect of fines and court appearances start appearing on the horizon 90% of the people saying they won't pay will cough it up.

You do remember what happened during the anti water charges campaign last time?

Also when the anti household tax campaign will be giving legal representation, people will feel more confortable and confident not to pay.

    Inserts obligatory facepalm picture.

Well that back fired spectacularly. He/she is obviously a shill for whatever anti group they keep posting about.

If you check the you will find out the following:

The Household charge is being sold as a local tax when it is actually a national charge for the national government.
The tax is being collected by the LGMA who have a board the Household Charge Board no mention is made of the LGMA or the Household Charge Board in the legislation.
You will required to give the householders PPS number, you might wonder why, the LGMA say its because there are lots of people with the same name the PPS given that it’s not tied to any particular address does not do what the LGMA say it does, so they must be collecting it for a different reason I will allow you to speculate.
PPS numbers can be checked by the LGMA however the Department of Social Protection have not given them permission to have access to the PPS numbers nor are they an organisation that is listed by the DSP as having permission to have access to the numbers.
The data protection commissioner has concerns about how the LGMA intend to enforce their brief, however there is no democratic control over the LGMA so any suggestion that we live in a democracy should be forgotten.
In conclusion if a transition year project presented this collection system of the household charge as part of their annual project they would be failed and yet our government seem to think its good enough for us.
We should all be very afraid.

:D It's such an over used term now, it has lost any impact. As somebody else said way back it doesn't make much sense anyway as apparently a majority are opposed to the tax, it's usually used to refer to the majority.

Don't think there'll be much arguing with that. Good job Ian64's not around.
