How long has the old CBC school and Senior college Eblana Avenue being sitting idle. What a sham, that too should be rezoned, revamped and utilised. What the heck are they waiting for.

I find it very odd that DL can't support a single secondary school.

The Christian Brothers deemed the site not good enough 60 years ago when the College secondary school part moved to Monkstown. Eblana went on despite the Brothers intentions, with free education giving a fillip to the school. Though once the likes of Clonkeen and Oatlands were built by the Brothers, a small cramped establishment like the school on Eblana Avenue was always going to struggle put against schools with playing fields and in housing estate hubs.

Similar with Dominican Convent. Pres Glasthule also suffered from being unable to expand on their site, they dropped being fee paying but were dead 15 years later when fee paying schools were back in fashion.

I think other factors are the growth in motor cars and buses since the 50s. Before then Dun Laoghaire was served by train so was ideal for many up and down the coast. Lots more areas could be served.

DL could certainly do with a decent size boys secondary school now, there is a massive catchment between Shankill and Monkstown with no boys school and theres a turnover in younger population that would sustain it. The old Fire Station / Council yard site would be ideal

    Clonkeen

You have to take into account that Blackrock is a very big school in itself, 3 times the size of the average size of school in the area.

And very expensive for a family on average earnings. I know of friends kids who travel from around DL to Stillorgan and Mount Merrion for secondary school because they have been unable to get into Clonkeen in more recent years. I think Pres is badly missed.

Well it's not like there are non fee paying girls options either. Loreto Dalkey, Cluny, Rathdown and Holy Child are all fee paying in the Shankill/Glenageary/Dalkey/Killiney area, with Loreto Foxrock close by as well. There's not many boys options in the area other than Clonkeen or go mixed in Cabinteely but as I said it's a bit of a quirk that Blackrock is such a large school and draws so many in.

Just the way it is in the locality with fee paying schools restricting options.

Pres Glasthule and Eblana closed within 15 years of one another, I'm just not sure DL is suitable for a school anymore.

Stena Line officially ending seasonal HSS service from DL - expected for a long time

Actually girls are slightly better served as they have both Rockford Manor and Sion Hill.

Not really. Rockford Manor and Sion Hill are in Blackrock/Monkstown, with Rockford Manor further away than Clonkeen would be to the Shankhill-Monkstown belt which was what was suggested.

not if you are in Dun Laoghaire/Monkstown area:) Maybe you mean Sion Hill is further away!!

Also forgot about Brendans in Bray which would be another option for boys in the Shankill end of that area.

That'll be a loss , but it frees the harbour completely for leisure craft and other activities such as the floating pool

Well I'd argue that Clonkeen being more central to that belt would be a little more convenient for most within the belt mentioned than Rockford Manor or Sion Hill.;)

St.michaels, Colaiste Eoin, Marion are all easily accessible boys school

Talking about non fee paying so Michaels isn't included.

I think the point was more about the scarcity of non fee paying schools between the Shankhill to Monkstown areas. I'd agree with that, just pointing out it's a quirk of the area. The DART and N11 bus corridor make non fee paying boy schools accessible.

Could be a possible spot for a big car park too in the holding area for vehicles waiting to go on the boats.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,568 ✭✭✭Chinasea

(Holy Child Community, St Lawrences & New Park - non fee paying).

Actually the point was that these buildings sit empty for decade upon decade, when they should be sold and utilised. Shortage of private housing in the borough.

No need for a car park. There's plenty in the harbour, pavilion , shopping centre etc

Well there's already a huge tacmac space which is a car park, as cars park there waiting to drive on to the boats, so it's not like much, if any, work would be needed.

During the Summer when it's busy it could come in handy.

A car park there is definitely not needed or wanted - we just have the new car park open for the library just across the road as well. Surface car parking's pretty ugly, I'm sure they find a better use for it.

I think that's the spot that they use for drive in movies.

It is, and for a circus occasionally, I dont think a car park is needed either, the ones nearby arent full as it is. Im sure somebody can come up with good temporary uses for a paved well drained location like that.

I see two big signs on the windows of Alex's Lucky Lotto newsagents in Dun Laoghaire "Closing Down". Corrs have gone in the last week or so and I notice the new barbers at the front of the shopping centre is gone and Maud's Ice Cream inside looks gone too. A tipping point has been reached I think.

I hear that the Spar beside the Coach House in Ballinteer has closed, though I haven't seen it myself. Seems strange, as there was a steady business there. He specialised in the 'country papers', which seemed to bring in a lot of people.

Speaking with some locals, they say it was empty of people as all the traffic was going to Centra instead and the shelves were pretty lacking of stock recently.

Gone are the days of Paddy's, with dusty sweets behind a glass counter :(

Walked by the Playwright on Newtownpark Ave and it looks like work has started again in earnest. Still not clear on what it will be a supermarket does seem most likely.

Also Sunway in Blackrock has closed which is no surprise.

Grafton barber opened in Stillorgan SC.

About 6 months ago also Base Wood Fired Pizzas is to open in Stillorgan SC in the unit between McDonalds and Mao

The Grafton Barber is a franchise - you get an otherwise independent barber cutting your hair and he is paying someone cash to use a brand name which has zero value add. At least with McDonalds there's some consistency in the product!

Maybe you go in case you might bump into one of their celebrity clients.... (hint: make a pot of tea while you wait for the data to download) ...

    http://graftonbarbers.com/celebrity-clients/

Most of the links on their 'Press' webpage don't work (404 file not found) ....

    http://graftonbarbers.com/press/

Personally I'd go up to the Polish barber near the credit union.

McDonald's is a franchise, Eddie rockets is one as is spar, centra, etc. What's your point?
It's a barbers that cuts hair, that is up to a certain standard in design

People like me go to Eddie Rockett's and McDonalds because you know what you're getting and you get served up the same product no matter where you go, that's the business model behind those franchises. I fail to see the value-add in getting my hair cut by someone who trades as a franchisee.

    Support independent local businesses.

If the brand name doesn't add value why would an independent barber pay for it?
A reconisgned brand name is an valuable thing in buisness. Why do you think Starbucks is so successful ? Or why is everyone talking about wetherspoons when there is some independent bars offering great value?
