Hi I am just writing to see if anyone has any info or advice..

I have an 8 month old chihuahua who has an undescended testicle.
I have been told by my vet that it is probably near his kidneys and has to have it removed in a couple of months or it will turn cancerous..
My worry with this is him going under anestetic as I know some dogs, especially small dogs, "don't wake up". :( It also worries me as he is only close to 2.5lbs and probably won't get much bigger.

He also has a permanent "snuffle" which might also affect the anestetic.

I love him dearly and can't bear the thought of something happening to him but I know i have to be realistic about it...

I'd love to hear from someone that has gone through this or can reccomend any vets specialising in smaller dogs in the Munster area.

    Thanks in advance :)

My daughter used Toby vet near the kinsale rd. roundabout in Cork, and was very pleased with the service for her chihuahua.

I have a small Yorkshire Terrier. When I took him to my vet to be neutered he was found to have an undecended testicle. The vet sorted this at the same time as the neutering.

There was no problem and my dog made a full recovery.

Size of the dog doesn't really make much difference as to anaesthetic risk- it has more to do with things like underlying disease, overall nutritional status, etc. My advice is to find a vet you like, ensure they use good anaesthetic technique (gas anaesthetic) with adequate monitoring (ie a nurse) and I'd say your dog will be fine. Definitely do get it removed though as it does pose a health risk down the line- it's not an uncommon procedure though so I'm sure your vet has done similar surgeries before.

I have had quite a few cryptorchids in rescue and obviously neutered as well. Make sure the vet is using gas as GA and be aware that your dog will have stitches on his belly not just on the scrotum. So you need to be vigilant afterwards re those belly stitches re infection or if the dog is at them, make him wear a buster collar. I have never had any problem with cryptorchid neuterings and well done for having it done at an early age as they can cause a multitude of problems, including behavioural due to the overproduction of hormones.

    Good luck!
