    If you fail a module does substituting a module instead of repeating save your GPA?

    If it's a core module you will be capped and it's counted as a repeat. If it's an option or an elective you can substitute it and it will be considered a fresh attempt so it won't be capped. Problem is it will cost €468 to substitute a module, multiple that by two if it's a 10 credit module.

    Is it not 344 for an arts module?

    Either way - very expensive!

    How much is a repeat?

    Also if you were hoping on passing the year on compensation for 2 subjects... You would need to get a E in both to pass with compensation... But if you get a F in one does that mean you only have to repeat the one with F or would you have to repeat both?

    A repeat ranges from €344 (a range of courses; arts, commerce, law..) to €688 (vet)

    In terms of pass by compensation its explained here:
    E Grade (Grade Point Value 1.6)

    E grades are failing grades, which have a grade point value of 1.6. These E
    grades may convert to P(C) (pass with compensation) only where you have
    completed and obtained passing grades in modules accounting for 75% or
    more of the total credit required to successfully complete the stage (usually
    9 modules) and the compensation GPA for the attempt at the stage is 2.00
    or greater. Provisional E grades are then considered compensated and final
    grades of P(C) are awarded.

    The F will have to be repeated, but as long as you still pass 75% of your modules, you will still be able to pass your E's by compensation.

    I will add that fees are now on a pro-rata basis so you need to add in 167 for the student contribution (1/12 of 2000) for any substituted module. They highlight that on the fees website in the links above. So the amount for the substitute is not all that people would be paying.
