Would a new Dell XPS be good for games like, say, Shogun Total War on highest spec? Probably not, but wondering.

    Almost certainly not!
Post the spec and price if you want actual advice but you can be 99.99% sure building will be better than buying.

If your afraid of building because you think your not up to the task, hwvs offer a service where they build it for you and there most people on here are willing to build it for you for free if you live within radius of someone.
But building a PC isn't hard at all, like delicate lego :)

I should be getting a computer only it's not coming by Christmas like I thought. Thought of this as a backup when I'm not home.

there are other retailers ( pcspecialist.co.uk or overclockers.co.uk ) who offer custom biuld PCs, which will blow any dell out of the water.

like mentioned above that german website will biuld it for you too, if you are not up for it.

make a thread in which you can list your needs and your budget.

*dells are good, but way overpriced for what they are. not much overclocking and upgrading later on too.

Are we talking about a laptop or a desktop?
What are the specs if this machine?

    Just don't get a Dell.
    Why ???
Anyway I thought the OP's Q was; would an XPS be good for gaming.
Not big into gaming as most games seem to be 'shoot n' kill'' or 'driving' (note I did have a soft spot for Duke Nukem back in the day) but I wantted a new PC, mainly for vid editing but also with an ability to play games.
I spent a year + compairing prices, built/selfbuild, the system had to be i7 with 8+ gigs mem, graphics card wasn't top priority, after signing up for dell-deals, eventually a system hit the price I was willing to pay (March: i7 2nd, 8gig +3empty). Basically same sys/gc as Alien but XPS. Problem with dell is finding out which motherboard is in the system on offer, no point in a non-upgradable motherboard, so it's true in a self build you know exactly what your getting.
For gaming I suppose the graphics-card is the big thing, having higher-specs than a budget-pc.

I think it all depends on what the OP wants/neads, a sole gaming machine or an all-rounder.
I'm real glad I got my XPS.

i still got my dell xps 420 with upgraded 6870 gpu and its a great machine for last 5 years. though now i biuld custom pc and dell could not match it at all.

i guess dell is a good solution for people who have extra money and doing first baby steps in PC work/gaming, but as soon as you got your grip with pc technology - custom build.

I've an XPS 600. It's a pretty decent machine. All I've been able to upgrade over the past 4 years is the RAM and GPU. There's nothing you can do in terms of the Mobo as it's Dell proprietary. I believe there is a faster P4 processor that fits, but it's expensive and not worth it for a minimal improvement in performance.

Up to recently, it did everything I wanted it to do. However, some of the newer games are struggling on it so it's time to upgrade.

I'll go for a custom build in the New Year. That will certainly be something I can upgrade as needed in the future.

This being the core problem with Dells, you're fairly locked into certain hardware choices.

I tried to rob a case fan out of a Dell and even that didn't fit because, it was made to fit Dells only. If you don't care about wasting money and just want something that will work. Then a Dell is fine.

OK I haven't posted in a while cause I've been very busy, but I can't let this post pass without comment.

I assume you got a z68 chipset then? no? shock, horror, Dell is a piece off ****. end of story. im sorry, but the only time a Dell is ever worth considering its when under ultra low budget , because it includes windows. that's it. no ifs or buts. that's it. you claim to have compared prices of self builds. unless you were comparing against something like custompc.ie there will have been no comparison.

just for fairness, will you post up your PC specs and ill dig up a thread from the same period comparing prices.

for my own clarity, I rebuilt my own PC on Alienwares website and I was over €4000 and I still hadn't matched my own specs yet. lets just say it costs under €1.5k from German and English retailers.

my favourite thing about DELL is that their high end gaming rigs usually have some I7 paired with a HD6450 our similar. I could get similar frame rates with my FX5200 gforce  (god that was a piece off **** even for its day :D)

actually ill probably see twice the fps with my HTPC. is got a phenom x4 with a gtx 460 so tbf its quite overkill for the streaming and YouTube it does. I wouldn't put a HD6450 up to anything else though, unless youre talking valve engine games.
