For me would have to be a much forgotten one called A Far Off Place. a Disney film but not the usual tripe, it drew criticism from parents for being too violent and what have you so that is a good thing.

I am Legend wasn't bad either but the happy community at the end is too far fetched. From what I've been reading here any community would be ruined by infighting, power struggles and people who want their xbox back.

    First Blood

Improvised shelters and clothing, fire starting, field medicine, cooking, traversing difficult rivers, interaction with local law enforcement, relocation drills, big FO knife, negotiation techniques, security of stores, power cuts, firearm selection and pungee stakes; it's all there.

The edge. Goes to show how much easier things could go if you had even a small amount of survival gear on you.

I don't think so, entertainment writers like to play up infighting and drama to make plots more interesting, but most small communities are actually pretty nice places, historically too. In a time of crisis I'd be surprised if things fell apart, give people a common cause and they pull together fairly well.

It was the christian moral tale bit of the movie that annoyed me.

Small communities can pull together, but they often have a different value system which can be difficult for others to follow.

The North Face, while not strictly survival in general terms - more surviving the elements - really shows humans at the edge in a very difficult situation - all pre-goretex era too!

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0844457/

Watch it in German subtitiles, much better.

Takes a while before the smalltown mentality begins to make an appearance, and I'd reckon it wouldn't while a serious threat persisted. It probably wouldn't make much odds to people with our particular inclinations anyway, we're happier outside. :D Our role would be as foragers, rangers, scouts and general long range watchdogs. Maybe traders depending on the situation.

The original Omega Man with Charlie Heston,on which I am Legend was ripped off.

The old BBC seris Survivors. Youtube has the entire seris.

    Jericho Season one was exellent.
Season two was IMO slapped together to finish off the story for the "Nuts !"protest.[Gotta watch it to understand that comment;)]

Threads..About as realistic as you could get on a post nuke war in the UK.

Plenty of other things we can do in a small town as well. Mercenary for hire security.

The squinting window philosophy is still alive and well I have to say in rural Ireland, along with let- somone-else- do -it! I- couldnt- be- arsed-participating - in -the-project-but-Ill -critique -it -no -end,mentality.

Slight tangent, but if you haven't read the book yet, do so. As much as I like the Omega Man, it's definitely a case of Book > Omega Man > Will Smith

I have yet to watch this but this guy is my hero Richard (Dick) Proenneke - Alone in the Wilderness

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,645 ✭✭✭krissovo

I prefer military escape and evasion type movies or survival with a purpose and escape rather than true wilderness survival. This may influence my favorites.

No 1....... The Pianist, Great movie and very moving even though it does not fit my usual taste. I use this movie as reference when I give seminars for how life as you know it can gradually change and you have to constantly adapt to stay in the game.

Real & Hero's of Telemark - Both the movie and Ray Mears documentary are a great insight. Watch the movie followed by Ray Mears to appreciate what these lads went through.

Flight of the phoenix & Ice cold in Alex, two classic desert survival movies

Deliverance, cheesy and american but a cool movie

I forgot one, Army Medicine in Vietnam.

Its a very graphic documentary about first aid and follow on medical aid in Vietnam. You need a strong constitution to watch it and I still hide my eye at some scenes 20 years after I first watched it but for anyone serious about survival and first aid its a must watch as first aid is often overlooked.

THe day of the triffids, book is better than film.

Okay i know it is unrealistic, but it got me thinking about what would i do if...

Like which of the communities would i stick with? Would i be a Coker or would i take some pickings and run?

once you starting thinking you can't stop...and soon you are prepping for real:D

Nobody has mentioned probably the one which started all of the modern day films (filums);)

No Blade Of Grass.........I think there is only me and turbo fingers Grizzly who must be old enough to remember it.

There are a couple of scenes which are class........Family trying to escape the cities which are starving and they are robbed of everything by normal folk at a country road block and the family ask "what kind of people are you" and the reply is "same as you mister, the same as you"............perfect for showing how people will desend to do anything when desperate enough........learn that lesson!!!

I watched this last night and it is pure misery but also pure garbage.

They wonder around the countryside in fear of their lives and also being eaten by canibals and at every opportunity they light the biggest fire possible usually just after they have managed to evade hoards of hungry canibals. Then to cap it he smokes his new found supply of 20 per day fags which would be smelt around and on him from 200 yards.

Interestingly the Omega Man film is actually based on the original book called, I Am Legend, written in 1950's by Richard matheson.

I have read the book and it's far superior, on many levels, than the film productions. Also the book is more detailed on the methods of how he is trying to be self sufficent
there is no happy ending in the book...how much more realistic do you want...

The whole Western survivalist world seems to have seen this film,as well as everyone else.
Alot of the sites/boards Stateside said it was very good in the fact it was more human group dynamics than blood and bulletts type fare..But it seems to have no general release here in the ROI???
Tried all the usual suspects for it.Xtra vision have never heard of it and they do have some good "odd" type films occasionaly and ALL the Irish films.Tried a few speciality video shops who could get the oddest films before. No one has it.
Every link I've followed up on sites like tubeplus.com,etc all go to dead ends.
seems to be that to watch it here you have to book it in somhow with your arty farty culture or film festival before you can be priviliged to view it here.
Maybe they thought it would be too depressing or controversial for an [im]mature Irish audience??:(

Watched the first episode yesterday, thanks for the tip. Not bad but a bit unrealistic in a few ways. One of the things that bugged me was that everyone was either 3rd level educated or a highly skilled tradesman.

Learned a bit though, especially about building a water filtration system. That was nice.

It can be a bit 'hollywood' or dramatic at times but it is very intresting to watch, I do agree with the fact everyone seems to be highly educated (isnt there a rocket scientist one of the seasons?) but its great to have that variety. You really see a power shift and the quirky inventer and practical members of the group quickly become alot more valuable than the ones with countless letters after their name...

I love the postman. Ridiculous story, even more ridiculous film, but you have to love kevin C. Aslo waterworld. great stuff.

Maybe we shoud do a list of the greatest Turkey survivalist films of all time too!As there are some crackers there.:D

Damnation Alley being top of my list.
Only good thing and main star of the film in that was the Landmaster vechicle, and George Peppard running a second. How the film came sofar away from the book which was a pretty good story,[without silly giant scorpions and mutant rednecks],is beyond me.Pity.

    The day after.
The classic 1980s,"Dont bother doing anything we will all die anyway!" Anti survivalist movie along with its equally cheery and same anti survivalism message sister film.Testament.:(

    When the wind blows
    Ditto!

    On the beach
Which one?The classic BW1950's by Nevil Shute.Or the overmucked up hyped 2000 version.Which was the same story without the grittiness of the original. It has all the sort of "dont bother surviving message..But when it was first made ,no one knew exactly what would happen in a nuke war and how long radiation would hang around or how far it would travel.
Fact is now it becomes a bit disappointing in the knowledge 50 years later that no ,we all wont die standing on the last bit of land in Austrailia before the Antartic.

    Book of Eli.
Apart from the most ridiculous gun battle since a B grade Hollywood western. It wasnt a bad concept or story.Cool sword too.:D

    Postman and Waterworld
Keep Kevin Costner away from good stories and scripts .As he'll turn them into epicsinvolving his family into roles and bore the pants off everyone,as well as ruin the stories.

    A boy and his dog.
Absolute comedy and satire at its best.:pac:

Amazed no one has mentioned Atomic Cafe,
Dr Strangeglove or how I learned to love the bomb,
    or Failsafe.

I just watched the "On the beach" could be the latest one?..........Tripe with a capital "T"

All the worlds dead from a nuke war and the survivors roar about in sports cars, helicopters and a nuke sub, at the same time consuming more booze than the whole of Ireland, and not just any booze only the best .........bubbly and scotch,

The only disturbing thing about it was that anybody allowed it to be released.

Please only suggest good films from now on.
