Warrior had a 30 million dollar budget so it's not really an Indie movie. I would definitely have Matt Damon in the best supporting actor category for True Grit.

If we're not going to add it to the category, we should probably remove all of these films from said category.

    American Indie:

Girl With the Dragon Tattoo - $90 million budget
    Moneyball - $50 million budget
    The Beaver - $21 million
    The Fighter - $25 million
    The Help - $25 million
The Tree of Life - $32 million budget
True Grit - $38 million budget

Possibly Drive also ($15 million budget).

Must have a better think but I'd suggest adding Another Earth into American indie and Rise of the Planet of the Apes into best visual effects.

Trollhunter, Crazy, Stupid Love and Fright Night for dumb fun

Re: the 'indie' category. Initially it was 'arthouse and indie', which I prefer, but we changed it based on comments in the feedback thread. But basically it's just a category for less mainstream American films for all intents and purposes.

A few other omissions that I just noticed:

    Best Foreign Language Film
    - Miss Bala
    - Elite Squad 2: The Enemy Within (I don't think this got a theatrical release here, but the DVD is out in a few days)

    Best Hollywood/American Indie/Dumb Fun (?)
    - Hanna

    Best Actress
    - Viola Davis - The Help

    Best Dumb Fun
    - The Adjustment Bureau

A movie directed by David Fincher and starring Daniel Craig, based on a very popular book with a $90 million dollar budget, is now classed as an Indie film? Ridiculous.

I think there's too much overlap between Hollywood Blockbuster and Dumb Fun. Either more should be done to differentiate them or Dumb Fun should be dropped altogether.

Re: the indie category, as johnny_ultimate said above, I think we ended up using it as a place for more serious, award calibre type films this year. Dragon Tattoo probably doesn't really belong there either way, but we can't start excluding films from it because it has a big star or big name director. As in music, "indie" is just a label that doesn't really mean anything anymore.

Are there any plans for short film awards?

I'm happy to throw it into the blockbuster category, but honestly this nitpicking is going to get us nowhere. It's only an internet poll at the end of the day, not worth getting worked up about. When we throw up the categories I'm just going to change indie back to 'arthouse & indie' because it seems to be pissing more people off shortened that it was when it was longer. Done, simple as that.
    Galvasean wrote: »

I don't think enough people will be familiar with the shorts of the year to make it worthwhile. Might be better starting off a dedicated thread in films to highlight the best of 'em :)

As for dumb fun, there's certainly overlap, but seemed to be a popular choice. Perhaps exclude the really big event movies and dedicate it to the slightly smaller or less popular movies that don't fit elsewhere? Bridesmaids, F&F or Final Destination, for example, I think fits snugly in there but not really anywhere else.

If possible I would like to nominate Flying Monsters with David Attenborough for best documentary?

It was released in IMAX and other selected cinemas in the UK in May 2011, however did not get any Irish cinematic release (that I know of), but was released here on BluRay/DVD. I think it was also shown on Sky 3D on Christmas Day.

Re: Dumb fun award, maybe don't allow anything on teh blockbusters list to be nominated for that, ie: make it more like a 'booby prize'?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 22,676 CMod ✭✭✭✭Sad Professor

I've updated the list with most of the remaining suggestions that weren't already added.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1 Charlie Casanova

Johnny, it's very generous to include Charlie Casanova in your list, considering it's such a divisive film and you came down somewhere on the dark side of that divide, but Charlie hasn't been released here yet - it will be this year - so, while it is flattering, it is also probably a little premature. Next year might make more sense?

Thanks again and keep up the passionate work.

Just wonderin, what does it mean by Newcomer. Is not newcomer to a leading role, to films in general, or just to a breakout performance?

No strict definition, but pretty much anyone who 'broke out' big time this year, or came out of nowhere to surprise you :)

I wasn't sure what to do with the Dumb Fun category tbh, so I just nominated my third and fourth favourite Hollywood Blockbusters.

See what people nominate, I guess. Overlap isn't the end of the world :)
