Is there any gyms close to IT Sligo that have olympic barbells, power racks, bench press, etc?

I have read those other threads regarding gyms in Sligo, but they are a few years old. And I was hoping that maybe a new gym opened or one of those gyms have got new racks and the likes.

Which gym do you reckon would be best for doing bodybuilding/powerlifting type workouts?

The yeats country hotel in rosses point is the only one I know of, it has power rack. Not that close though.

What about that proper old school gym next to the dunnes entrance of wine st car park. I think it's close to the casino. I've never been in there myself, I was in Clarion's gym when in College, but some of my mates used it to bulk up.

Do they not have a brand new gym in the IT?

The op asked for gym with racks and free barbells, which neither the it or clarion have, just smith machines. The gym beside dunnes, better bodies, is closed.

Yeah, the clarion is not a gym for bodybuilding. Betterbodies closed? Well that's the only one I knew about.

There's a new gym called popeyes (i think) opened just recently opposite where betterbodies used to be. They seem to advertising their weights section heavily. Don't know what its like but I'd wager it'll be more weights focused than many of the hotel gyms.

there seems to be very little ventilation in it, I'd imagine it will mould up quite quickly if there isn't.

If it is not ventilated how will the heat and moisture that will be generated be removed. It could get unpleasant after a while. The windows if there are any will have to be opened! It is a question to ask at the beginning.

for clarity, my comment about lack of ventialtion is based on seeing the photos. I haven't been into the gym. I don't want to do the place an injustice if there is actually a ventilation systmen in place.

Go to the gym in the IT, it's €5 a session for members of the public, I've been going there religiously since May

Gotta say the IT gym is muck imo, anyone know if Popeyes gym has a proper bench press set up?

It's muck if you can afford to pay the membership for the gym in the Clarion otherwise it's probably better than the rest, especially better than the one in the Sports Complex

Having gone to most of the gyms in Sligo (excluding the Clarion, which from what Ive heard is poor with regards to free weights) Id say the mercy gym is far ahead of the rest. The equipment in the IT gym is very limiting, almost all machines bar the smith machine which it should be said can't be used to properly bench and is dangerous to squat with, let alone dead lift, and it's dumbbell selection is weak as well. From what a friend has told me it gets packed very quickly as well.

I haven't seen popeyes yet so hopefully it will be good but as far as a gym in sligo goes your'e best bet is the mercy gym but unfortunately it can get busy quiet quickly as well. It's a shame Sligo does not have a proper well stocked gym, you'd think one would clean up business wise if it opened.

Finding a proper well stocked gym in the North West is fairly difficult. I wouldn't get too excited about Popeyes either the building is literally failing apart from the outside but if it's any good post about it on here.

I can't remember exactly how much I was paying for the clarion, but it worked out much cheaper than paying €5 a night in the IT.

If you go to the gym 6 times a week, that's €120 every 4 weeks, so about 135 or so a month. Pay that over a year and you're talking at over €1600. I think I paid something around €700 for the year in the clarion.

I used to sometimes go to the gym 2 times a day too, if I fancied just hitting the pool and sauna in the evening after college, having worked out in the afternoon between classes.

Popeye's is focussed on weights and free weights/bench. I was talking to the guy who opened it. He's from eastern Europe but has lived here for years. Nice young fella trying to make a go of it. He used to use Better Bodies and always lamented it's passing. He said it was a rush to get it going. I imagine he still has some tidying up to do. Probably worth a look, if that's your bag.

I'm doing strength training so I'm not going 6 times week lol I go twice a week (I have a kettle bell so no need to be in the gym all the time)thats €10 a week, €40 a month, €480 a year, a fair bit shy of the Clarion membership price. I'm on the dole too so paying a €700 a year subscription fee is out of the question.

€10 a week x 52 weeks = €520 a year. I'd imagine you can get off peak membership for that price in the clarion, and as you're on the dole it would be well worth it because the gym is pretty empty during the day and you'd also get to use the jacuzzi, sauna and pool.

You should look into it, it might be worth it for you, it'll get you out and about during the day.
