Upper part of smerlagh river in County kerry ireland. Kerry county council developed a dam and have stopped atlantic salmon and sea trout from spawning in there breeding grounds.

River feale in county kerry one of two dams built on the upper streches of the special area of conservation. Built three years ago by Kerry county council. No fish pases were built causing widespread flooding and fish kills of salmon not being able to get over the dams.

Does KCC actually know about this particular problem?

They don't seem to care about quarrying being allowed close to, or within Special Areas Of Conservation, for instance e.g. the quarrying at Woodford/Ballinruddery that's laid waste to a once scenic area, a good view of which you get from the other side of river in Listowel.

Hi, could this dam possibly be connected in some way to the bog slides in the area in 2008 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerry_bog_slides)? If so then it was rather intended to prevent the fish kill at the time...

    Merry Christmas :)

Very good point that it was to prevent the fish kill, but the fish were already dead and i know that the spin was to protect the rest of the valley from being overtaken by the slide. The problem i have with this is that how come there has been absolutley no work done to take the dam away at the present time, no fish passes or no scentific work been taken out for resolutions. Also another point is that it is known locally that maybe just maybe the river was feeding the local drinking water pipeline? Lets see what happens!

Taught i throw this up... isn't it funny stocks are done now, salmon take about four to five years to mature before they return to breed in the streams they were born... the river smerlagh is prob the must important breeding rivers to the mighty river feale.. in my opinion the river feale should be up there with the moy and it was years ago...

5000 salmon and sea trout killed, i have walked this river ten times this winter and have seen no fish, i am not saying there is none there but i have seen no evidence of spawning etc…

The river is a special area of conservation and still noting has be done about it, really the fishery board and the planning authority and tra investments should all contribute to a hatchery to recoup the salmon that were lost…

Here is a link to a debate which like everything came to noting!!

Another article about the fish kill… Like i can't understand the politics of this, they grant licenses for nets on the cashen to kill roughy about two thousand fish, the poaching also that goes on there is astonishing…

Then they turn around and say we might close the river because there is a lack of returning salmon…

5000 salmon and sea trout killed in a special area of conservation thats a massive deal to me but obviously not to the government and then they will have the cheek to turn around and say!!

People can't cut turf because of the european union and special areas of conservation…

    A joke!
