Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Is "The Green Man" a sexist pig?

Saw this at lunch time and thought it was quite funny

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2080258/Cross-green-figure-The-bizarre-politically-correct-instruction-pedestrian-crossing-sign.html?ITO=1490
It is the symbol that has helped us cross the road for decades - a striding green man.
But for one council the term appears to be a little too gender-specific.
Lincolnshire County Council is introducing new signs at pelican crossings in Boston telling pedestrians to 'cross with the green figure' in a move branded politically correct.

Boston borough councillor Ossy Snell said: 'It seems a little bit like it’s seen as sexist. Women might think men are controlling if a green man tells them to cross the road.

So AH users, any bizarre examples of political correctness encroaching on common sense in your own lives?

Obviously no reasonable person disputes genuine issues of equality like equal pay between the sexes and so on, but I do think some attempts at political correctness are just a daft waste of time by people who should have more important things to worry about.

Political correctness gone mad? Surely you mean political correctness psychologically challenged?

Then if it's given a skirt, it's sexist.

If it's given a bust to show it has a womanly shape, it's objectivisation of women too which is sexist.

    Can't win.

I vote we all get the East German green man. His coolness will settle the argument.

    Yes, I have video evidence:

A woman could never summons you to cross the road with such forceful command.

I would replace the beeper with a booming voice saying "Cross The Road, bitches", much in the style of "Luggage Doors Operate".

Also the sign that says 'wait for green man'

I heard you can't refer to your computer by its traditional name - apparently it's not PC anymore.

It isn't a man. It's a figure, an icon ...

This is not "political correctness", just more precise use of language.

When will the Daily Hatemail stop looking for anything, anything, anything that suits its right-wing, racist, xenophobic, jingoistic, misogynistic and just plain dinosauren stupid agenda to whine about?:)

Kind of like this sign: http://salemcountyfair.com/graphics/600px-No_dogs_svg.png

I was recently walking with my (white) dog in a place where they had a sign like it. A rather snooty old cow said to me: "Don't you understand what that sign says?" I replied: "Yes, no black dogs. Shame on you for your racism!"

I love the Daily Mail for the same reason I love watching politicians. You have to know what to laugh at and what to take seriously. Like everything else in the Mail, this is not in the latter camp.

So some gimp says it should be referred to as the green person (if the story is true) and people will rightly ignore them and nothing will happen to them and life will go on.
All this non story is designed to do is get the "Oh look, political correctness gone maaaaaad" brigade foaming at the gash. Look where it's published.

Or, if they take on the "Walk, Don't Walk" signs from the US, there'll be people in wheelchairs complaining... :pac:

What about a manhole cover - is that going to be renamed to a personhole cover......

And a blackboard is now a chalkboard I believe (blackboard was considered a racist term)

    And what about mankind....

Banaltra (the irish word I learned for nurse) is now altra

It could be worse, apparently mens and womens toilets in Manchester University were "genderist". See the above link for an interview with the Welfare officer of MUSU and how she justifies the change!

The guy doing the report is a tremendous tool. He tried to rile up the welfare officer at the end and all, charming.

    That is utterly piss-poor journalism.

In Camden Town, in Lahndan, there are (or at least used to be) a few pedestrian crossings were the green man had dreadlocks and was surrounded by green stars. Coolest looking dude. They should all be like that.

At my university, there was a delegation from the particularly shrill gender studies department to the civil engineering department wanting them to teach the term "Personnel Access Facilitator (PAF)". I kid you not.

I don't know why women take issue with the word, "manhole". They already have enough holes of their own.

TBH the vast majority of people who work down them are male.

Some people do want to look for offense where none was intended. And I find that very offensive. It's very difficult to appease such people.

Aye, "apparently." Has anyone actually experienced this "ultra-PC" phenomenom? Like, I mean apart from reading about it in Richard Littlejohn's column.

Not once in my life have I ever been called up over talking about green men or chairmen, or blackboards. Not once, and I can almost guarantee you that anyone I know would have the same experience.

OK, so maybe acceptable to go around talking about spics and darkies, but I don't feel that's particularly oppressive. To paraphrase something someone on this board once wrote, "PC isn't so bad...it makes arseholes feel uncomfortable in civil company."

Yet more political correctness gone mad. When will this silly nonsense end?

I'm sure, however, that Harriet Harperson will be proud of that council's decision.

It's been established that those myths created by the Daily Mail/Express don't particularly affect people in their day to day lives.
