I am moving into a rental apartment next week and was given the lease to look over before we sign it.

Under main points to note it states:
"The tenant agrees to pay stamp duty (if any) on this Agreement and counterpart"

Under Tenant Covenants it states:
"To pay the stamp duty charged on the original and counterpart of this agreement, if any"

Does anyone know what this means?

Any help would be very much appreciated

Stamp duty applies to leasing a property as well as purchasing one, however there are very generous exemptions so it is unlikely you have to worry about this.

A lease of a house or apartment for a term not exceeding 35 years or for any indefinite term and where the rent does not exceed €30,000 per annum is exempt from stamp duty.
