Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Isn't it strange that Russians and Japanese and Nepalese and Croatians all manage to hold on to their heritage and names are proud of them . But as soon as some Irish see beautiful old names they suddenly find them " strange "

What you have forgotten is the many names also came after the wriitten language evolved and have meaning .

I have an Irish name and have never had an issue with abroad . Most people who encounter it will politely ask how it's pronounced and make a great effort . Funnily enough only in Ireland will people look at it like its an alien name

i live in croatia/gf is croatian, she just told me there is a džejms bond+last name ofc first name is pronounced james :pac::pac:

Heard yesterday that a cousin’s grand-daughter was going to be named “Pepsi”. Parents chose an almost equally bizarre name for child and its sibling which I won’t give here for fear of identification of the individuals. If Pepsi had. Even chosen, maybe sibling could have been named “Fanta” or “SevenUp” etc.

Coke must have been gone, Pepsi is always everyone's 2nd choice

Blaise is a French name, Blaise Pascal, Blaise Matuidi. It sounds good with a French name and in a French accent but Blaise O'Brien, doesn't quite work.

Feast of St Blaise will be any day now. You can get your throat blessed!

Apart from the fact that no one outside Ireland and few in it can say or spell it, nothing.
Apart from that Caoimhe which spelled phonetically is Queeva, just sounds like queesy. Now, yep, I'd definitely inflict that on a child.

    I have a grand-daughter Caoimhe. Lovely name

In the village I grew up in the male dentist's name was Vivian. Always seemed like a feminine name to me but apparently a lot of men are named so.
I came to post this. You must have grown up in the same village as me.

Perhaps they're missing the same idiot with us both on here.

A friend of mine is after calling her newborn Princess Dollceanna.

At first I thought she meant, my princess Dollceanna, which would of course be bad enough on it's own.

But nope, her name is Princess Dollceanna ...

Katie Price called her daughter Princess Tiaamii. Tiaamii is a mix of both Katie and Peter's mother's names, which isn't the worst. Princess is ridiculous though. It's fine as a nickname for a little girl but imagine being a grown woman and people have to call you Princess! She called her other daughter Bunny. Cute on a child but not so cute once your grown up.

Just saw this in the Irish times and thought of this thread. Ok, it's not a kids name, but I'm assuming he was a child once.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/business/commercial-property/privileged-couple-fight-over-division-of-business-after-breakup-1.3792813
A south Dublin businesswoman has sued her former partner, claiming she is entitled to a share in a property business they allegedly built up together over years.

Owen Owens disputes those and other claims by Ali Barker and also wants orders requiring her to leave the house where she currently lives.

also, this popped up in my google news feed

    https://www.irishmirror.ie/showbiz/irish-showbiz/michaella-mccollum-drug-mule-ireland-13987217
When asked where she got the inspiration for her sons' names, Michaella had a surprising explanation, saying: "When Rafael Nadal first came on the scene in tennis I fell in love with the name and said, 'that's what I will call my boy when the day comes'."

And she revealed she chose the name Rio as it went well with Raphael.

I've posted on this before. Satchel...but as 'regular' names go 'Keith' always strikes me as a rough thing to call a child.

I saw a Ch4 doc on travelers and a kid was called Fanta. No word of a lie, Fanta.

I’m watching a show on Channel 4 called how other kids live (it’s great, definitely recommend). There was a 9 year old girl on it called Isis. Her parents explained they had named her after the Egyptian goddess before the ISIS that we all know and don’t love was a thing.

Poor girl would have to explain to others that ISIS were actually called daesh. Felt sorry for her and her parents.

This is a real name of a boy in a Laois town I came in contact with through work.

    Mustafa Shi*ta.

I kid you not. The Shi*ta family were all library users.

Another boy who had moved from the Carribbean to Laois (I know from the sublime to the ridiculous) was called Canary. Seems to have been named after the wrong islands.

    Full name Canary Bento.

In college I had a classmate with a really poetic, cool name.

    Elliott Milton.

Sounds sophisticated but he was a real country chap from Clare.

I worked in the libraries all my life, come across some extraordinary names where I tried desperately to look serious when some new patrons would register for cards. One colleague was in the very warm-hearted habit of saying “welcome (first name) to the library service, may I guide you to shelves...” , but when it came to one of the Jesus’, he kind of hiccuped on saying it out!
