Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Add your reply here. There were 2 Shakira's in my daughters pre school class.

Shakira is a Muslim name that's not uncommon amongst Indo-Caribbean people. Michael Caine's wife, Shakira Baksh, is originally from Guyana.
I have a Barbadian friend who was a classmate of Rihanna's in primary and secondary school. His mother liked the name and his younger sister was named Rihanna. She's about 16/17 now and for the past two years has told everyone that she wants to be called by her middle name.

Is that how she spelled it? The letter K isn't even in the Irish alphabet...
There is an Irish name called Caol or Cáel (one of the Fianna was called Cáel) which I presume would be pronounced Kale.

    Sonny.

That's his actual name. I mean, it's cute for a 2-year-old boy, but when he's a grown man...?

Priyah also happens to be the name of Raj's sister in The Big Bang Theory. Leonard went out with her for a while. That was the first time I heard it...I daresay like a few others.... ;)

That girl would have been 3 before Isis came to public attention

The beautiful Labrador in Downton Abbey was called Isis. They eventually had him die from cancer, to be replaced by a puppy in the final scene. They denied it had anything to do with the fact that the dog had the same name as the Isis terrorist organisation!

There is an Irish name called Caol or Cáel (one of the Fianna was called Cáel) which I presume would be pronounced Kale.
In Leslie Thomas "The Man with the Power" there was a baptism taken by a slightly deaf vicar.
When asked for the babies name the mother replied, "John."
There was a pause, and the mother, thinking the vicar hadn't heard her, repeated, "John."
"Right", said the vicar - and christened the baby John John.

A question for the good folk enjoying bad name parenting...I've just had a post pop up on my facebook tagging an aquaintance. It was a cake maker tagging my aquaintance because she made a cake for her son, not to give away too much I'll give an example of what it said (changing names and event) "James's first birthday". Now this is driving me mental, surely its James' first birthday? Maybe its just me being a grammar fanatic, but is James's excepted these days? Are parents aware of these things when naming a child? Maybe it was the cake makers doing. I'll probably get loads of "James's is fine to use". I think im just cranky.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,029 ✭✭✭SusieBlue

An aquaintence has a little Maison, the spelling being a variation of the Kardashians kid Mason. Wouldn't be a fan of Mason but it's not the worst thing to land on a kid.

However, when I see this version written down, all I see is the French word for house and I just cannot unsee it. In my head I even pronounce it the same as the French word. :O

In Tesco yesterday, I heard a mother call out for her son, Brooklyn.

You truly haven't lived until you've heard the word/name Brooklyn said in the strongest Dublin accent you've ever heard - I give you....."Bruke-AH-Lynne".

You're correct on James'. There's a tendency in certain parts of Dublin for some people to add an s after an apostrophe that follows an s - if you've ever heard a Dub say "Me fadder wurked in Guinness's" you'll understand! ;)

Oh btw, the word you were looking for was "accepted" not "excepted". Somewhat ironic given that you were criticising their incorrect grammar.....only slagging btw! ;)

No, James's is grand. It's only not OK if the name ends in the pronounced syllable 'es'.

So, Moses' brother OK. Moses's brother not.

    Jesus's mother not.

St James's Hospital in Dublin is actually called James's. The address is
St. James's Hospital, James's Street, Dublin 8, Ireland. · tel: 01 410 3000 · and is listed as such on their website which, funnily enough is http://www.stjames.ie/ . The street it's on goes by St James's Street as does this one in London https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_James%27s_Street.

As you're a "grammar fanatic", you might like to know that "accepted" and "excepted", while being (almost) homonyms, are not synonyms. Oh, and "its" and "it's" are also not interchangeable. Glad to be of help.:D

Met a fella called 'Muirís' at the weekend, gaelige for Morris. Think that's how it's spelled, the pronounciation was 'Murr (rhymes with cur) -ish

I didn't like it anyways, I just called him Merc

Just got directed to MummyPages on Facebook who have an article on 30 Unisual Girl's names in Ireland. It reads like a Pornstar Index in the comments section.

"I called my girl Angel Starr cos I was havin a bad pregnancy n an angel made me betr n gave me her"

"My baby is Alexa Annalynn cos that's me two nannies names, Anna and Lynn xoxox"

There's also Kodi-Rose, Maysa (which mammy proudly declares she's only heard of one other time, ) ,Lola Grace and Darcey Mae

    Then this absolute gem

"My girls are called Morgane Rose, Darci Elizabeth, Pippa Daisy, Dakota Poppy and Willow Missy (and my son is called Cedar Dominic!!!!).

I don't know of it's funny, sad or infuriating.

My best mate's girlfriend's kid is named Poppy, while it's certainly not the worst kid's name I've ever heard it's still a terrible name.

It works fine for the cute, energetic toddler she is now but can you imagine a grown woman in an office job called Poppy?

Maybe in 20 years it'll be the norm, but I can't imagine reading a CV from someone called Paris or Ruby Rose or Brooklyn Koa Blu (yes that's a real one) and taking it seriously.

Someone I know called her daughter Lexi, and that's what everyone has called her since birth, however she put "Alexia" on her birth cert so that it can be used in a formal/professional environment when she's older if she wants.
