Well you obviously didn't see/hear them on the BBC/SKY, because if you had you'd be raving about the display like those of us who did :))

The trick is to make sure you have a decent set of speakers plugged in to your TV, (the pictures are only half the fun), and the sound quality this year was truly amazing, with a Thumping fifteen minute soundtrack on BBC1, or just the bangs & booms along with crowd cheering on Sky News.

God RTE are f***ing hopeless. Why cant they show us some fireworks or revellers around the country celebrating and capture the atmosphere?Instead we get familiar faces weve see and heard countless times b4 talking about nothing particular interesting.De Valera and Lemass were even mentioned at one point ffs.It was like an episode of Tubridy distilled into 20 minutes.

Agreed, RTE don't like seeing people happy so they bring on these miserable sods onto this gloomy depressing chat show, I mean we see these people every couple of months.

it was ****ing devestating car-crash tv, I had to turn off ASAP.

RTE has never known what to do for New Year's Eve, and never will. In future, they should close down at 11pm and save electricity as well as not have hand over any appearance fees to dead-beats.

..and as for Miriam, she might be good at serious stuff, but should never be let anywhere near any kind of chatshow.

Crystal Swing and JEDward are still alive..
And Evanne Ní Chuilinn is pregnant with another man's child..

That's a fkn great start to 2012, isnt it..:mad::mad::mad::mad:

Parents asked us to switch to it. watched a minute and it was so bad, we watched reruns of QI on Dave instead and just switched back for the countdown.

I was shocked when we did switch back as it was essentially an RTE staff New Years party broadcast live for the benefit of everyone else to watch the license fee be literally p*ssed away.

How we as a nation are broke and still paying for this BS is beyond me. Sell it off and see the great "talent" at RTE Television survive as a private entity.

Turned on for curiosity around midnight. Saw and heard what sounded to be a drunken Brendan Grace telling crap jokes then the show when to 3/4 boring people sitting around a small round table (in the most crappiest of cheap looking, just as boring dull tv sets) and they started droning on about sports of the past in the most awful monotonous tone with some old guy.

That was enough - I quickly changed having confirmed that RTE TV standards were as bad as they too regularly are!

Disgusting, terrible, god-awful stuff that part of our TV licence is sadly paying for!

The firework show my neighbours put on beat rte's offering out the barn.

To think we give rte a licence fee to pay for that "entertainment".

Why the f**k can rte not find some young talent and give them a chance instead of the usual roping in of the contents of their canteen.

Had beens and never have beens and in jedwards case ,never should ve beens. That folks is rtes idea of talent

With the same criticism levelled at RTE each year, it shows that they ignore any criticism from us mere mortals, because they never change a feckin thing, or even attempt to entertain anyone on New Year's Eve.

They obvious think that us licence payers don't have a clue what we're talking about, and they just carry on with the annual talentless pissed-up luvvie-fest regardless.

They might blame it on lack of funds, but they came up with the same crap "entertainment" during the boom-years.

RTE people talking about RTE to RTE people.

    Vs
Jessie J, Cyndi Lauper, Imelda May, Sandie Shaw over on BBC.

Most people have more than 2 channels these days.

Why does RTE continue to broadcast such rubbiish,

Last night's dreadful and pathetic lame attempt at RTE indicated to me that the TV station needs a purging of talentless rubbish and a major new revamp as it is our - the licence payers' - money that is being wasted.

The govt need to go in and give RTE a much needed enema. But will they have the balls to do so?

I think RTE hit a new low last night with that show. I Tought last year was poor but it seems RTE are capable of lowering their own standards (ahem), like come on a whole show with Mariam just interview RTE staff......

Jedward last night...cringe. I don't understand why RTE decided to interview Jedward and Brendan Bowyer together. I know thats part of their charm but do they have to act like 12 year old the whole time.

It was like a life story show and mixed with depressing talking, the whole thing was cringy and painful.

Oh well atleast the BBC resorted some of my pride.

He and a few others also set themselves up as a 'company' for tax reasons apparently.
That way it appears they pay less back to the state in deductions as they are not officially an RTE full time employee but as someone hired (legal-wise) from outside!

    For example:
Of the 10 presenters listed in 2009′s top ten list, eight are contractors and two are staff employees.

The highest earner that year was Pat Kenny, who earned €729,604, which was paid to Pat Kenny Media Services Ltd.

Behind him was Balcom Management Ltd, representing the late Gerry Ryan, which was paid €585,944.

Third-highest earner was Ryan Tubridy – €519,667 was paid to his Tuttle Productions Ltd.

Marian Finucane was next, with Montrose Services Ltd paid €513,270

Joe Duffy’s Claddaghgreen Ltd was paid €389,314.

Baby Blue Productions was paid €290,625 for the services of Miriam O’Callaghan.

Derek Mooney, an RTE employee, earned €268,985 in 2009.

Mac Consultants Ltd were paid €225,485 for the services of Eamon Dunphy.

The second staff member on the list, Sean O’Rourke, was paid €214,084.

The tenth highest paid earner at RTÉ was Colm Hayes Media Services, for the services of Colm Caffrey, which was paid €213,954.
    Source: http://www.thejournal.ie/rtes-top-earners-revealed-altogether-they-were-paid-e3-95m-277491-Nov2011/

Nice loopholes in the tax laws apparently just for them to use to avoid paying normal staff deductions!

Yowza! They really went to town on the fireworks this year, clearly their best effort ever.

Though those first 12 seconds really did put me in mind of V for Vendetta, which may not have been what they were going for.

Last night's show was truly awful.

It's RTE's obsession with telling us who and what is important in Irish society, talking of Lemass and Dev on NYE with the same guests who take turns every week on The Late Late Show.

    It was awful.

One unfair criticism is lack of fireworks. That's not RTE's fault. BBC didn't pay or organise London's they just broadcast it.

The problem is the whole awful way that NYE is a non-event in Ireland, having lived abroad I love Christmas in Ireland but hate NYE.

I just had a look at the TV Guide a few minutes ago and I see that RTE are repeating Gaybo's One Night Only - Dubliner's Special tonight at 10:40. The programme was only shown on Christmas Night

Why on earth are they showing this again tonight - New Years Night???

Jesus but it was bad last night, we turned on about 3 minutes to midnight an they were showing some awful reeling in the year type reel about doom and gloom, the IMF, elections and the euro problems. Thankfully we remembered BBC HD, bloody amazing fireworks. RTE should be absolutely ashamed, it didn't even bother covering the concerts in Dublin city centre last night.

I heard that there was some really good stuff going on in College green.RTE never mentioned this, leave alone cover the programme.

The fat backs in RTE should be made to account for every Euro they are paid by the tax payer.Ann Doyle leaving RTE - is this news ? FFS , This is another job.She was paid a good salary. She must be retiring on a good pension, when the rest of Ireland is getting their arse burnt with more taxes, banking debt and personal debt.

News from RTE - my arse

PJ Gallagher's expression summed it up for me:

    pj.jpg

Agree with what was said above about the whole RTE using the opportunity to push "RTE's 50th" as opposed to actually entertaining the viewers... Brendan Grace doing the same act as 30 years ago (actually merging in to the character with his own dishevelled appearance and lack of sobriety)... Neil Toibín with his usual arrogant, smug, snide remarks..

Brendan Bowyer, John Bowman, Michaél O Muircheartaigh are all admirable people, but this was not the night to have them on... I mean, RTE had to break from discussing John Bowman's BOOK to do the countdown..

You could frequently hear the sound of the air conditioning, and people looking bored and checking their phones throughout the show... All it was missing was a tumbleweed..

Miriam, as usual, is AWFUL at light entertainment.. I'm frequently embarrassed for what Prime Time Miriam would think of light entertainment Miriam.. She seems to overcompensate for her tough Prime Time persona, by fawning all over everybody..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6 disneyoutlook

I felt sorry for Miriam. The guests kept doing their own thing and talking over her.
As usual a letdown by RTE this year.
Maybe a pre-recorded show next year with some live inserts around the country maybe a better option!! oh and some fireworks...:o
